Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Simon Gagne scored the eventual game-winning
goal and added an assist to lead the Philadelphia Flyers past the Washington
Capitals, 3-1, at the MCI Center.
Peter Forsberg also had a goal and an assist while Mike Rathje scored as well
for the Flyers, who are 7-0-1 on their current 11-game road trip. Rookie
goaltender Antero Niittymaki made 23 saves in the win.
First-year standout Alexander Ovechkin scored the only goal for Washington,
which has lost three straight and five of its last six games overall. Bryan
Muir had the primary assist while Olaf Kolzig stopped 30 of the 32 shots he
faced in the loss.
Ovechkin opened up the scoring with a power play goal 8:55 into the first
period to put Washington out in front. Muir got the puck from Dainius
Zubrus at the point and sent it just above the left circle for Ovechkin, who
blasted a one-timer past Niittymaki.
The Flyers answered with a shorthanded tally early in the second period to tie
the game at 1-1. Shortly after Philadelphia fended off a 5-on-3 disadvantage,
Rathje gained control of the puck, skated into the Washington zone, and then
wristed a shot from the right circle that beat Kolzig through the five-hole.
Gagne then recorded his 29th goal of the season with 2:27 remaining in the
second frame, tucking a rebound into the wide open net to put Philadelphia
Washington outshot the Flyers 10-5 in the third period but was unable to get
the puck past Niittymaki.
The Flyers finally put the game away with 20 seconds remaining, as Forsberg
stole the puck in the Washington zone and wristed it into the empty net to
ensure Philadelphia's third straight win.
Philadelphia currently has the most points in the league (60)...Atlanta's Ilya
Kovalchuk recorded a hat trick Friday to move ahead of Gagne
as the league's goal leader (30)...Ovechkin has goals in seven of his last
eight games...Washington finished 1-for-8 with the man advantage and has power
play goals in eight straight games...The Flyers were 1-for-5 on the power
play...Philly's only loss on the road swing came at Washington on December 31,
when it fell 4-3 in a shootout.
