NHL Game Summary - Pittsburgh at Philadelphia |
(Tuesday, April 11th)
Final Score: Philadelphia 4, Pittsburgh 3
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jeff Carter scored the game-winning goal
on the power play late in the third period to lift the Philadelphia Flyers
past the Pittsburgh Penguins, 4-3, at the Wachovia Center.
Joni Pitkanen tallied a goal and an assist, and both Simon Gagne and Brian
Savage added a goal each for the Flyers, who have won two of their last three
games. Robert Esche made 23 saves for Philadelphia.
The Flyers' win coupled with the Rangers' loss to the Islanders Tuesday pulled
Philadelphia within three points of first place in the Atlantic Division. The
Flyers still sit two points ahead of sixth-place New Jersey, which defeated
the Carolina Hurricanes in overtime on Tuesday. The Flyers travel to New
Jersey on Thursday before hosting the Rangers on Saturday.
Sidney Crosby notched a goal and an assist, and both Ryan Whitney and Michel
Ouellet netted a goal apiece for Pittsburgh, which has lost two straight and
four of the last five games. Sebastien Caron stopped 23 shots for the Pens.
Tied 3-3 in the third period, the Flyers regained the lead with 6:32 left
when Carter slid a rebound past Caron, who was prone on the ice, from below
the left circle.
Pittsburgh pulled Caron with about a minute left in the contest and generated
a great scoring chance with the extra attacker. John LeClair had a one-timer
from the slot that seemed destined to get through Esche's five-hole, but Esche
closed the wickets to keep the Pens at bay.
Philadelphia scored the first three goals of the game to take a commanding
lead. Gagne netted his 45th tally of the season 4:38 into the second period
after his wrister from the right circle beat Caron glove side.
The Flyers increased their lead midway through the second stanza when Savage
redirected a pass with his backhand over Caron's glove for a 2-0 advantage.
Philadelphia upped its lead to 3-0 at the 13:39 mark of the middle frame as
Pitkanen beat Caron stick side with a slap shot from the slot.
Pittsburgh began its comeback just over a minute later while on the power play
as Ouellet poked a rebound past Esche's stick side to make it 3-1. The Pens
got back within a goal 1:32 into the third period after Whitney beat Esche
with a wrist shot from inside the right circle.
The Penguins netted the equalizer at the 8:16 mark of the third when Crosby
one-timed a loose puck into an open net from below the right circle.
