Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Jochen Hecht tallied a goal and an assist and
Ryan Miller made 21 saves to lead the Buffalo Sabres past the Tampa Bay
Lightning, 3-1, at HSBC Arena.
Chris Drury and Henrik Tallinder also scored a goal apiece for Buffalo, which
has won two of its last three games.
"We talked before the game that we should have a better start than we have
had," Tallinder said. "Today I think we did that. Tampa played three games in
four nights, that was part of it. The most important thing was we were ready
to play off the face off."
Martin St. Louis scored Tampa Bay's only goal and Sean Burke stopped 28 of the
31 shots he faced for the Lightning, who had a modest two-game winning streak
"I think we could of played better," Burke said. "You could always find a
couple things to break it down but the bottom line is we didn't find a way to
win. It's unfortunate because we need these points right now."
Buffalo drew first blood with 18.7 seconds left in the first period while on
the power play after Hecht deflected a shot from the high slot past Burke for
a 1-0 lead.
The Sabres upped their lead to 2-0 with 9:50 left in the second period after
Drury's wrister from the left circle beat Burke stick side for a power-play
Tampa Bay drew back within one with 7:37 remaining in the second period after
St. Louis, who was camped at the side of the net, batted the puck out of mid-
air and past Miller to make it 2-1.
Buffalo regained its two-goal advantage 2:15 into the third period after
Tallinder beat Burke with a one-timer from the slot off a feed from Adam Mair
for a 3-1 lead.
The Lightning pulled Burke for an extra attacker with over a minute left to
play but did not get any closer.
The Sabres improved to 3-0 against the Lightning this season...Tallinder has
scored four goals in his last six games. He now has a total of nine goals in
161 career games...With an assist, Sabres center Tim Connolly has 13 points in
his last 15 games...Buffalo outshot Tampa Bay 14-3 in the first period and
31-22 for the game...The Lightning went 0-for-4 on the power play, while
Buffalo was 2-for-7.
