NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Los Angeles

(Saturday, April 8th)

Final Score: Anaheim 4, Los Angeles 2

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Chris Kunitz scored a pair of goals to guide the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim past the Los Angeles Kings, 4-2, at the Staples Center.

Rob Niedermayer had a goal and an assist and Joffrey Lupul also lit the lamp for Anaheim, which moved three points ahead of idle Edmonton and two in front of Colorado for fifth place in the Western Conference standings. Goaltender Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 25 saves in the victory.

Nathan Dempsey and Craig Conroy each had a goal while Mathieu Garon turned away 19 shots for the Kings, who remain in 10th place in the West and four points behind San Jose and Vancouver for the eighth and final playoff spot.

"We are aware of the situation, that's why the effort has been so disappointing," said LA defenseman Mattias Norstrom. "We say all the right things, then we don't execute."

The Ducks jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 2:45 into the contest. Francois Beauchemin found some room at the point and released a shot that was redirected by Niedermayer in front before slipping through the pads of Garon.

Anaheim went on the power play moments later, and cashed in at the 7:49 mark. Teemu Selanne worked along the right side to set up the scoring chance, then dished a centering feed that caromed off a defender into the left slot. Lupul pounced on the loose disc and mustered a backhander from one knee that found room short side to make it 2-0.

Conroy cut the deficit in half with a power-play tally at the 8:15 mark of the second period. Just 32 seconds later, however, Kunitz took a feed from Andy McDonald between the circles and fired a wrister that beat Garon high to the stick side to extend Anaheim's advantage to 3-1.

Kunitz added his second of the night and 18th of the season just 22 ticks later, gliding a wrist shot from out front through Garon's five hole to push the lead to three goals.

Dempsey countered with a marker with 2:08 left, but the Kings were unable to get any closer.
