NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Dallas

(Friday, March 24th)

Final Score: Dallas 3, Chicago 2 (SO)

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Brenden Morrow scored in the eighth round of the shootout to lead the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks at American Airlines Center.

Philippe Boucher and Sergei Zubov tallied the regulation goals for the Stars, who have won two straight and six of their last seven games. Johan Hedberg started in net, giving Marty Turco a rest, and stopped 24 shots and seven shootout attempts.

Dallas has beaten Chicago in all four matchups this season and has outscored the Windy City team 24-8. Also, Dallas now has 97 points and trails Detroit by five for first place in the Western Conference and the NHL.

Kyle Calder had a goal and an assist and Mark Bell tallied the other goal for the Blackhawks, who have dropped their last four games. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 22 shots in the loss.

After Bell tied the game in the final moments of the third period the teams were unable to net the game-winner in overtime.

Matthew Barnaby came in first on the shootout for Chicago and he deked to the backhand and slid it between the five-hole of Hedberg. But, Zubov tied the shootout up with the same move.

The next seven shooters for the Blackhawks and the next six shooter for the Stars were all unsuccessful on their attempts.

But, Morrow skated in and flicked a wrist shot that went between the right arm and chest of Khabibulin for the game winner.

It was a slow-paced scoreless first period. Dallas outshot Chicago, 8-7 during the first stanza.

The Stars drew first blood in the game on a 5-on-3 power play. Mike Modano had the puck high along the left boards and fed it to Zubov in the high slot. Zubov gathered the puck and blasted a shot that went over the right pad of Khabibulin 2:02 into the second period.

That was it for the scoring in the second period, but the Blackhawks tied it up early in the third period.

As Radim Vrbata skated into the Stars zone two Stars players collided to open up the ice. Vrbata threw a centering pass that Calder one-timed into the upper right corner 2:10 into the final 20 minutes.

Dallas regained its lead with another power-play goal 4:30 after the Chicago goal. After Hedberg had broken up a breakaway at the other end Morrow brought the puck into the Chicago zone on the transition. He got the puck to Boucher, who from the middle left boards let fly with a shot that deflected off of Jim Vandermeer, who was tangled up with Morrow in front of the net, and past Khabibulin.

Chicago pulled its goaltender in the final minute and the move paid off. Modano tried to clear the puck from the left side of the net, but it hopped over his stick and Calder picked it up. He immediately centered it to Bell, who one-timed it into the left corner with 0.4 second remaining.
