Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Brenden Morrow scored in the eighth round of the
shootout to lead the Dallas Stars to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks
at American Airlines Center.
Philippe Boucher and Sergei Zubov tallied the regulation goals for the Stars,
who have won two straight and six of their last seven games. Johan Hedberg
started in net, giving Marty Turco a rest, and stopped 24 shots and seven
Dallas has beaten Chicago in all four matchups this season and has outscored
the Windy City team 24-8. Also, Dallas now has 97 points and trails Detroit by
five for first place in the Western Conference and the NHL.
Kyle Calder had a goal and an assist and Mark Bell tallied the other goal for
the Blackhawks, who have dropped their last four games. Nikolai Khabibulin
stopped 22 shots in the loss.
After Bell tied the game in the final moments of the third period the teams
were unable to net the game-winner in overtime.
Matthew Barnaby came in first on the shootout for Chicago and he deked to the
backhand and slid it between the five-hole of Hedberg. But, Zubov tied the
shootout up with the same move.
The next seven shooters for the Blackhawks and the next six shooter for the
Stars were all unsuccessful on their attempts.
But, Morrow skated in and flicked a wrist shot that went between the right arm
and chest of Khabibulin for the game winner.
It was a slow-paced scoreless first period. Dallas outshot Chicago, 8-7 during
the first stanza.
The Stars drew first blood in the game on a 5-on-3 power play. Mike Modano had
the puck high along the left boards and fed it to Zubov in the high slot.
Zubov gathered the puck and blasted a shot that went over the right pad of
Khabibulin 2:02 into the second period.
That was it for the scoring in the second period, but the Blackhawks tied it
up early in the third period.
As Radim Vrbata skated into the Stars zone two Stars players collided to open
up the ice. Vrbata threw a centering pass that Calder one-timed into the upper
right corner 2:10 into the final 20 minutes.
Dallas regained its lead with another power-play goal 4:30 after the Chicago
goal. After Hedberg had broken up a breakaway at the other end Morrow brought
the puck into the Chicago zone on the transition. He got the puck to Boucher,
who from the middle left boards let fly with a shot that deflected off of Jim
Vandermeer, who was tangled up with Morrow in front of the net, and past
Chicago pulled its goaltender in the final minute and the move paid off.
Modano tried to clear the puck from the left side of the net, but it hopped
over his stick and Calder picked it up. He immediately centered it to Bell,
who one-timed it into the left corner with 0.4 second remaining.
Dallas hosts Calgary on Sunday...The Blackhawks host the Sharks on Sunday...
Bell notched his 22nd goal of the season, which is a career best for
him...Dallas is 11-0 in the shootout, while Chicago is 2-5...Dallas is 12-0-2
(two ties) in its last 14 games versus Chicago and has not lost to the
Blackhawks since a 3-2 loss on January 20, 2002.
