NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Chicago

(Sunday, March 19th)

Final Score: Phoenix 3, Chicago 2

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Shane Doan netted the deciding goal and Curtis Joseph turned away 34 shots as the Phoenix Coyotes held on to beat Chicago, 3-2, at the United Center.

Paul Mara and Mike Comrie also scored while Steven Reinprecht donated two assists for Phoenix, which has won two of its last three contests since dropping three in a row.

Mark Cullen and Curtis Brown each had goals for the Blackhawks, who have lost five of their last six. Nikolai Khabibulin came up with 23 saves in defeat.

"We're getting better," Brown said. "We gave ourselves enough opportunities to beat (Joseph)."

Phoenix took a 1-0 lead 4:42 into the contest, as Mara finished a tic-tac-toe sequence with a tally from the left slot.

Brown evened the game with less than nine minutes to play in the opening frame. The puck came loose in front on a Chicago rush, and the center swooped in and chipped a backhander through Joseph's five-hole.

The Coyotes, however, lit the lamp twice in the second period to assume a 3-1 advantage.

Comrie put Phoenix back on top with a rebound putback at the 9:11 mark.

Then, with 3:16 remaining in the stanza, Doan unleashed a snapshot that just evaded his defender before caroming off Khabibulin's glove and into the back of the cage.

The Blackhawks moved within one late in the third stanza, as Cullen gathered a rebound in front and punched it home with 3:23 left.

Chicago applied heavy pressure in the waning moments with its netminder pulled, but were unable to beat Joseph.
