NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Phoenix

(Saturday, October 29th)

Final Score: Dallas 5, Phoenix 3

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Sergei Zubov and Niko Kapanen scored third period goals as the Dallas Stars came back twice from two-goal deficits to defeat the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-3, at Glendale Arena.

Mike Modano, Stu Barnes, and Jeri Lehtinen also had goals for the Stars, who snapped a two-game losing streak.

Johan Hedberg made 20 saves for his second victory of the season.

Shane Doan had a goal and an assist and Mike Ricci and Fredrik Sjostrom each had goals for the Coyotes, who had a two-game winning streak snapped.

Curtis Joseph, who recorded his 400th career victory against Calgary on Thursday, made 36 saves in the loss.

Two Phoenix turnovers in the third period created the opportunities for Dallas, down 3-2, to take the lead.

Zubov tied the game up just 58 seconds into the third period. After he intercepted a pass at mid-ice, Zubov took the puck into the zone and from just inside the blueline sent a wrist shot that beat Joseph.

With the puck deep in the Phoenix zone, a weak clearing attempt was picked up by Kapanen. His quick wrist shot went over Joseph's right glove to give the Stars a 4-3 lead with 9:51 remaining in the match.

The Coyotes had a late power-play opportunity to tie the game up but, despite a couple of good chances, came up empty.

An empty-net goal by Lehtinen finished the Coyotes and the scoring for the night.

"I wasn't pleased with our effort tonight," said Phoenix coach Wayne Gretzky. "The only thing I can say about the team with the 12 games is that the effort was very solid every night, but the effort was not solid tonight."

Doan started off the scoring on the night with a goal 3:22 into the game. A pass from the right boards by Geoff Sanderson hit Doan on the stick in the left circle and he one-timed it over Hedberg's left shoulder to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

With Phoenix on the power play, a Doan shot was saved by Hedberg and after Sanderson had a whack at it Ricci knocked the puck in to give Phoenix a 2-0 lead with 10:19 left in the first.

Barnes got Dallas on the board with 53 seconds left in the opening session. Barnes took the puck in the zone, made a nice move to get past Derek Morris and sent a wrist shot from the slot that bounced off the inside of Cujo's right pad and into the net.

"This was a big win for us because we've had two games we started very bad," said Jussi Jokinen. "Like today we were down 2-0 and then we just get a first break, we get that big goal Barnes thew in and we decided we are gonna win this game."

The Coyotes got their two-goal lead back just 2:46 into the second period. Sjostrom sent a wrist shot from the right point and, with Ricci screening, Hedberg never even saw it and the Coyotes went up 3-1.

Modano cut the score to 3-2 with his fourth goal of the season. With the Stars on the power play, Jason Arnott threw the puck towards the net from the right boards. A mad scramble for the puck was picked up by Modano, who sent a backhander from the left circle over Joseph's glove with 8:34 left in the second period.
