Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Dominic Moore scored a pair of goals and
Henrik Lundqvist made 38 saves to lead the New York Rangers over the Montreal
Canadiens, 5-2, at the Bell Centre in the opener of a home-and-home set.
Moore, who has recorded all six of his career points against Montreal, scored
the first and last goals for New York, which has won two in a row after losing
Martin Rucinsky added a goal and an assist, but left the game in the third
period with an apparent knee injury, for the Rangers, who ended a four-game
road losing streak and won for just the second time as the guest this season.
"It's really good to come to Montreal, play against a really good team and get
two points," said Lundqvist.
Richard Zednik had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who have dropped
two in a row after winning three straight. Montreal will have a chance to
inflict some revenge on Monday night when these two team conclude this set in
The Rangers scored early and often in the first period, jumping out to a 3-0
lead heading into the intermission.
After Moore gave New York a 1-0 lead just 2:46 in, Jaromir Jagr extended the
advantage to two goals just under eight minutes later.
Martin Straka broke into the zone along the left side boards and dropped a
pass to Michael Nylander at the top of the left circle. Nylander then sent a
pass across the ice to Jagr at the top of the right circle, who one-timed a
slap shot off the glove of Jose Theodore and into the net.
Then, just 1:08 later at the 11:45 mark, Rucinsky put home a rebound of a
Marek Malik shot for a three-goal cushion.
Following a scoreless second, the Canadiens made things interesting early in
the third. Alex Kovalev scored just 51 seconds into the frame by redirecting
a Zednik shot.
Zednik then scored at the 4:28 mark to make it a 3-2 game. Saku Koivu had
assists on both goals, giving him six on the season.
However, New York responded with a pair of goals just 38 seconds apart midway
through the period.
Steve Rucchin tallied the first goal 9:34 into the period, tapping in a pass
from Jed Ortmeyer. Then, Koivu lost the puck in his defensive zone at the
left circle to Moore, who skated in and beat Yann Danis high to the stick
"We just didn't show up in the first period," said Koivu. "After being down
3-0 its hard to catch up.
"It's just unacceptable the way we played the first period."
Danis came on for Theodore to start the second and finished with 14 saves.
Theodore stopped 10 shots in the first period.
Jagr has a nine-game point scoring streak, posting nine goals and five assists
over that span...Montreal won the first meeting of the season between these
two clubs, taking a 4-3 overtime decision on October 6...Each team went 0-
for-3 on the power play...Moore has three goals this season...Montreal fell to
3-3 at home this season.
