NHL Game Summary - Washington at Buffalo

(Wednesday, October 26th)

Final Score: Washington 3, Buffalo 2

Rochester, NY (Sports Network) - Jaime Heward scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period and Petr Sykora had a goal and an assist as the Washington Capitals defeated the Buffalo Sabres, 3-2, at Blue Cross Arena.

Olaf Kolzig made 15 saves, Jeff Friesen scored his first goal of the season and Steve Eminger tallied two assists for the Capitals, who won for the first time on the road this season and snapped a two-game losing streak.

Ales Kotalik and Jochen Hecht scored goals and Ryan Miller stopped 25 of 28 shots for Buffalo, which had won each of its first four games at home and had a two-game winning streak halted. The Sabres were playing at the home of their AHL affiliate.

Buffalo tied the game at 2-2 just 1:18 into the third period after Hecht, who was camped in the left circle, took a pass from Chris Drury and unleashed a wrist shot that beat Kolzig glove side.

Washington regained the lead just over three minutes later while on a two-man advantage. Heward gathered a pass from Bryan Muir in the left circle and blasted a slap shot that cleanly beat Miller glove-side high for the 3-2 lead.

The Sabres pulled Miller for an extra attacker with under a minute left in the game and generated a couple of scoring chances, but each was turned away by Kolzig.

Buffalo got on the scoreboard with 5:22 left in the first period while on the power play after Kotalik blasted a slap shot from the blue line that beat Kolzig stick side for the 1-0 lead.

Washington got the equalizer 22 seconds later after it won the ensuing faceoff and raced into the Sabres' zone. Friesen, who was centering a three-on-two rush, fanned on a pass to his left winger but recovered the loose puck in the slot and fired a wrist shot that beat Miller glove-side low.

The Capitals took their first lead of the game early in the second period after Sykora grabbed a rebound at the right post and stuffed into the open net. Matt Pettinger jumped off the bench to catch Buffalo in a line change, gained the offensive zone and took a shot from the left circle. Miller made the initial save but the rebound came right to Sykora for the 2-1 lead.
