Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Jason Allison had two goals and one assist
and Mikael Tellqvist stopped 29 shots as the Toronto Maple Leafs cruised past
the Tampa Bay Lightning, 5-1, at Air Canada Centre.
Mats Sundin had a goal and an assist and Nik Antropov and Matt Stajan scored
for the Maple Leafs, who have won two of their last three games.
Ruslan Fedotenko scored the lone goal and Sean Burke was lit up for five goals
on 30 shots in the loss for the Lightning, who have lost two straight and five
of their last six contests.
The Maple Leafs opened up the scoring thanks to a 5-on-3 power play in the
second period. With Fredrik Modin and Martin Cibak in the box, Tomas Kaberle
fired a shot from the top of the left circle that Burke made a save on.
However, the rebound went right out front where Allison backhanded it over the
goaltenders right pad 5:55 into the period.
"Its nice to enjoy the win, but we won't be happy until we get into the
playoffs," said Allison. "Our goal now is to get ready for Tuesday night."
Toronto opened up at 2-0 lead with 2:41 left in the middle stanza. With Tampa
Bay on the power play Aki Berg forced a turnover and got the puck to Stajan.
He skated down the length of the ice on a 2-on-1 rush and from the right
circle snapped a wrister into the short side of the net for the shorthanded
The Lightning finally got on the board in the third period. Fedotenko dug the
puck out deep along the right side of the net during a scrum, skated out
front and snapped a wrister that went into the left corner to make it a 2-1
game 6:23 in.
The Maple Leafs, though, regained their two-goal edge a little over a minute
later. Bryan McCabe dumped the puck into the Lightning zone and it went all
the way around to the other side and bounced out to the left circle. Allison
picked it up and snapped a shot between Burke's five-hole for his 13th goal of
Toronto opened up a 4-1 advantage thanks to another 5-on-3 power-play goal.
Darcy Tucker fed a pass from the right circle to the left circle, where Sundin
fired a shot over the glove of Burke with a little less than half the period
Tampa Bay had a couple of power plays in the last half of the game, but were
unable to capitalize and Nik Antropov added the final tally of the game with
The Maple Leafs host Boston on Tuesday...The Lightning continue their five-
game road trip on Monday at Montreal...With the win Toronto finished up the
season series with Florida tied, 2-2...Stajan leads the league in shorthanded
points with eight...Allison's second goal of the game was the first even-
strength goal by the Leafs in 166 minutes and three seconds, which spans back
to the game against Montreal this past Tuesday...Tampa Bay has allowed 50
goals in its last nine games...Toronto is 20-1-3 when leading after two
periods this season.
