NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at NY Islanders

(Thursday, October 20th)

Final Score: NY Islanders 5, NY Rangers 4

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Mark Parrish scored twice, as the New York Islanders spoiled Jaromir Jagr's hat trick and completed a home-and-home sweep of the New York Rangers with a 5-4 triumph at Nassau Coliseum.

Miroslav Satan, Jason Blake and Arron Asham added goals for the Islanders, who had been winless in their previous ten matches with the Rangers, going 0-8-2 before Wednesday night's victory.

Rick DiPietro, making his second straight start after sitting out the previous two games with a concussion, made 26 saves.

Jagr had his first three-goal game in a Rangers uniform and it marked his first hat trick since February 4, 2003, when he played for Washington.

Martin Rucinsky added a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who had reeled off three straight victories until facing the Isles.

Kevin Weekes, playing for the first time since October 10th due to a groin injury, made 16 saves.

The Islanders jumped to a quick 3-0 lead, on just three shots, 2:47 into the contest. They scored the goals in a span of 78 seconds.

On a two-on-one play, Alexei Yashin made a beautiful pass under a defenseman's stick to a cruising Satan, who sent a high wrister into the back of the net just 1:29 into the game.

Just 26 seconds later Blake, with a Rangers player all over him, deflected a centering pass from Trent Hunter past Weekes.

Parrish made it 3-0 on a power play goal 52 seconds later. A centering pass by Alexei Zhitnik from the left boards was deflected by Parrish into the net and the Islanders appeared to be on track for an easy night.

"We knew that it was important to come out with a bang tonight. We got the crowd behind us and that carried us through the game," said Parrish.

However, the Rangers came back hard against their rivals with Jagr scoring twice in a 55-second span in the final minute of the first.

The Rangers got on the board with a 5-on-3 power play goal with just 58 seconds left in the period. After having two shots blocked by Islander defensemen, Jagr took a pass from Martin Straka and sent a wrist shot over DiPietro's left shoulder to make the score 3-1.

Not content with ending the period 3-1, the Rangers kept up the pressure. Straka sent a centering pass from behind the net that found its way to Jagr's stick. The sprawled-out DiPietro had no chance and Jagr sent the puck to the back of the net with just three seconds left.

"We have to play smarter with the lead, we can't make those little mistakes that let teams get back into it," said Yashin.

The Islanders got the two-goal lead back on a short-handed tally by Asham just 1:47 into the second period. The Rangers made a pass to get out of their zone that Asham intercepted. He skated in and got the shot off as he was being pulled down, and the puck trickled under Weekes to make it 4-2.

The Rangers scored just 44 seconds later. Marcel Hossa made a cross-ice pass from the left circle to Rucinsky, who one-timed it past DiPietro for his fifth goal of the year.

The Isles cashed in on a power play 51 seconds into the third period. With Michal Rozsival in the box, Brent Sopel took a slap shot from the right point and Parrish, in front of the net, deflected it between Weekes' right pad and the post to give the Isles a 5-3 lead.

Jagr would not let the Rangers leave the building without a fight as he scored with 5:42 left. While on the power play, Jagr threw a pass to the point and Marek Malik sent a slap shot on net. DiPietro made the save, but Jagr picked up the rebound and sent a shot into the net to complete the hat trick.

"The coaches are helping me so much, I can play the game the way I know best," said Jagr. "That's always a good feeling. Here they let me play my game."

The Rangers got some good pressure in the offensive zone, but were unable to get any quality scoring chances in the final minutes.
