NHL Game Summary - Boston at Buffalo

(Tuesday, March 7th)

Final Score: Buffalo 3, Boston 2

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Jochen Hecht scored the game-winning goal late in the second period to lift the Buffalo Sabres past the Boston Bruins, 3-2, at HSBC Arena for the back end of a home-and-home set.

Jason Pominville and Thomas Vanek added a goal each and Ryan Miller made 25 saves for Buffalo, which has won three straight. Daniel Briere added two assists for the Sabres.

"There were times when we lost momentum killing penalties," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said. "After we got through those stretches, I thought we were the more determined team and had the better opportunities. You've got to give their goaltender a lot of credit. He made some key saves on odd number situations."

Patrice Bergeron and Milan Jurcina scored a goal apiece and Tim Thomas stopped 32 shots for Boston, which has lost five of its last six contests.

"Obviously at this point in the season we need to collect as many points as we can," Bruins defenseman David Tannabe said. "I think going forward we have to do the things we've done in the past. We need to start winning."

Boston drew first blood 8:59 into the first period after a shot by Brad Boyes hit a Sabres' defenseman then caromed off of Bergeron's skate and past Miller for a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo tied the game less than three minutes later while on the power play after Pominville beat Thomas glove side with a wrist shot from the right circle to make it 1-1.

The Bruins regained the lead 3:10 into the second period while on the man advantage after Jurcina's wrister from the right point went off of Miller's blocker and in for a 2-1 lead.

Buffalo retied the game with just over nine minutes left in the middle frame after Vanek, who was camped on the doorstep, deflected a shot past Thomas to finish off a 4-on-3 power play.

The Sabres took their first lead of the game with 3:51 left in the second period after Hecht backhanded a rebound past Thomas from the bottom of the right circle for a 3-2 lead.

Boston pulled Thomas with nearly a minute left in the game but could not get another one past Miller.
