Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Sedin had a goal and two assists and
Alexander Auld made 28 saves, as Vancouver handed Detroit its first loss of
the year, 4-2, at Joe Louis Arena.
Vancouver was able to shut down the red-hot Detroit power play, which was
first in the league coming into the game. The Red Wings ended 0-for-6 with the
extra skater tonight.
"You've got to give them credit, they played hard. They took advantage that
we might have been a little tired tonight," said Red Wings goalie Manny
Mikael Samuelsson got the Red Wings on the board 3:50 into the first period
with a backhander on the shortside past Auld to make it 1-0. It was
Samuelsson's fourth goal of the season.
Vancouver had its best chance of the first period when Anson Carter was alone
down low with 4:00 left, but Legace came up with a big save.
Auld came up big early in the second period by making a nice save on a slap
shot by Samuelsson
Vancouver then tied the game at 7:04 of the second period on a breakaway goal
by Matt Cooke, his first of the season.
After deflecting a pass attempt by Daniel Cleary, Cooke skated in all
alone and beat Legace on a backhand shot. It was the first goal by a Vancouver
forward other than Markus Naslund this season.
The Canucks later took the lead on a goal by Sedin, who accepted a beautiful
pass from Mattias Ohlund and put the puck past Legace for his first tally of
The Red Wings had a 1:44 five-on-three power play in the second but were
unable to score. Brendan Shanahan had the best opportunity but his slap shot
from low in the left circle went high over the net.
Legace kept the Wings in the game by making a big save on a Naslund slap
shot early in third.
Less than a minute later, Detroit tied it up on a goal by Tomas Holmstrom, his
first of the season.
Holmstrom got the goal during a scrum in front of the net after Cleary
centered the puck on a wrap-around play.
Detroit had a good chance to take the lead with nine minutes left but Auld
kept it tied. Pavel Datsyuk tipped a Shanahan pass but Auld caught it with the
glove to keep the score tied.
Carter then gave Vancouver the lead for good less than 30 seconds later with
his first goal of the season.
On a centering pass by Sedin from behind the net, Carter flicked a wrist shot
past Legace to give the Canucks a 3-2 lead.
"It was a great play by the twins. For me, (the goal was) pretty easy, just
put the puck in the net," said Carter.
Auld was tested toward the end but kept the Red Wings from getting the

"I just felt the puck hit me, I don't know how many times," said Auld. "I
heard one of my defensemen yell, it's still loose and then somebody shot it
down the ice."
Richard Park sealed the win for the Canucks with an empty-net goal to finish
Vancouver is 3-11-1 in its last 15 games at Detroit...Samuelsson has a goal
in each of Detroit's four games this season...Vancouver's power play is just
3-for-21 in the first three games this season...Detroit plays at Los Angeles
on Thursday, while Vancouver travels to Minnesota on Thursday...Sedin's points
