Denver, CO (Sports Network) - David Aebischer made 24 saves for his 13th
career shutout and Brett Clark scored the only goal, as the Colorado Avalanche
blanked the Columbus Blue Jackets, 1-0, at the Pepsi Center.
Aebischer made 11 saves in the second period and eight more in the third for
Colorado, which has won two straight and five of its last six overall. The
Avalanche begin a three-game road trip in Dallas on Saturday.
Pascal Leclaire played a tremendous game in goal with 39 saves for the Blue
Jackets, who have dropped three straight games. This marked the second time
this season that the Blue Jackets were blanked by Colorado, which posted a 5-0
victory in late November.
The lone goal came on the power play at 15:51 of the second period after
the Avs had failed on two prior man-advantage chances earlier in the frame.
After Adam Foote was assessed a four-minute penalty, a one-timer by Rob Blake
from the top of the right circle was stopped by Leclaire, who survived a
flurry of Colorado shots within a 45-second span.
Pierre Turgeon then held control at the right point and fed the puck down low
to Andrew Brunette, who was stationed along the goal line to the right of the
net. Brunette then sent a sharp pass into the crease, where Clark redirected
it home for his seventh goal of the season.
"The power play was really good," said Clark. "I got the pass, held my ground
and got it in."
With under two minutes to go in the second, the Blue Jackets squandered a
great scoring chance while skating 5-on-4. A wrist shot from the point hit
several players in front and the rebound sat in the crease. With Aebischer out
of position, David Vyborny was all alone in front with an open net, but his
backhander hit the post after Aebischer appeared to get a piece of it.
"I got a lucky bounce and then it hit the post," Aebischer said.
With eight minutes remaining in regulation, Leclaire made an unbelievable
stick save on Joe Sakic, who was all alone near the left post. Sakic's
backhander was headed for an open net, but Leclaire reached out and stabbed
the disc out of midair.
"We tried to stay in the game as long as we could," said Leclaire. "We gave a
Late in the final session, Blue Jackets forward Jan Hrdina missed a golden
opportunity to net the equalizer. With Aebischer down and traffic in front,
Hrdina was in perfect position in the lower right slot, but the puck slid off
the heel of his stick and went wide left.
