Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Shawn Bates netted the game-winning goal
midway through the third period and Rick DiPietro stopped 41 shots as New York
defeated Carolina, 3-2, at Nassau Coliseum in the Islanders home opener.
Miroslav Satan and Jason Blake both had goals for the Islanders (1-1), who
improved to 21-10-1-1 in home openers.
Eric Staal had two goals, Oleg Tverdovsky had two assists and Cam Ward had 32
saves for the Hurricanes (1-2), who were 0-for-5 on the power play and are 0-
for-15 with the man advantage for the season.
Much of their problems Saturday were the result of DiPietro's effectiveness.
"He'll give us a chance to win every night if he plays way that he did
(Saturday)," said Blake of DiPietro.
Carolina took a 1-0 lead with 7:15 gone in the first period after Josef
Vasicek hit Staal in stride with a two-line pass at the blue line. Staal beat
DiPietro glove-side high with a wrist shot for the goal.
Jason Blake netted the equalizer with 6:59 remaining in the second period.
While on the power play, Brent Sopel took a slap shot from the right point
that Ward stopped. But Blake swooped in, grabbed the rebound and flipped it
The Islanders took their first lead of the game early in the third period
after Satan threw the puck on net and Ward made a pad save. But the puck
kicked off the stick of Tverdovsky and into the air towards the net. Both Ward
and Tverdovsky took swipes attempting to keep it out, but it fluttered in for
a 2-1 lead.
Bates upped the Islanders lead even though the Hurricanes were on the power
play. Bates grabbed a Carolina turnover in his own end, skated down the left
boards, glided into the left circle and unleashed a wrist shot that beat Ward
stick side for the Islanders' first short-handed goal of the season and a 3-1
With their goaltender pulled, Carolina got within one after Tverdovsky took a
slap shot from the high slot that was redirected in front by Niklas Nordgren.
The puck hit the post and Staal slammed the rebound into the back of the net
to cut New York's lead to 3-2.
DiPietro stoned Staal with just over 30 seconds left to keep the Islanders'
Twelve of Bates' 39 career goals for the Islanders are short-handed, including
six in 2002-03...The Islanders have a lifetime record of 40-41-9-0 vs. the
Carolina Hurricanes. At the Nassau Coliseum, the Islanders are 21-20-4-0...It
was the first time the Islanders opened at home against the Hurricanes...Arron
Asham made his 2005-06 debut after missing all of the preseason with a rib
injury. Asham recorded 24 points in 79 games in 2003-04.
