Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Ryan Miller made 35 saves and Buffalo scored a
pair of second period goals en route to a 4-1 victory over Boston at HSBC
Maxim Afinogenov, J.P. Dumont, Mike Grier and Ales Kotalik all scored for the
Sabres, who put together their second straight strong effort to open the
season. Buffalo begin the year Wednesday with a 6-4 decision over the New York
Andrew Raycroft stopped 37 shots in the loss, the Bruins' second straight to a
division opponent to start its 2005-06 campaign. Boston fell 2-1 at home to
Montreal on Wednesday.
With the Sabres on the power play, Dumont gave the hosts a 1-0 lead with just
over seven minutes elapsed in the second period, when he one-timed a beautiful
cross-ice feed from Thomas Vanek over Raycroft's shoulder. Boston was
shorthanded due to an interference call on defenseman Jiri Slegr.
The Bruins would gain a power play less than a minute later when Grier was
whistled for tripping, but had shots by Brian Leetch and Brad Isbister hit the
crossbar during the man advantage.
Buffalo made it a two-goal cushion with six minutes left in the second
session. Henrik Tallinder ripped a shot from the right point that deflected
off Chris Drury's stick, then off the skate of Grier and into the net.
Boston would finally solve Miller with 13:29 left to play, as Glen Murray
knocked home a cross-ice pass by Slegr to bring the Bruins within 2-1. Joe
Thornton also assisted on the tally.
The Sabres, however, would put the game away when Kotalik rushed down the
right side and beat Raycroft glove side with 4:03 remaining.
Afinogenov netted his third goal of the early season with 1:23 left to play to
close out the scoring. Teppo Numminen assisted on the power-play score set up
by a slashing penalty on Kevin Dallman.
Buffalo ended the night 2-for-7 with the man advantage.
The Bruins, who went 0-for-7 on the power play in Wednesday's loss, failed on
all three of their tries in this game...Boston won five of the six meetings
between the clubs in 2003-04...Dumont's goal was his second this
season...Bruins center Alexei Zhamnov was scratched for the second straight
game with a shoulder injury.
