NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Pittsburgh
(Saturday, March 27th)
Final Score: Buffalo 2, Pittsburgh 2
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Konstantin Koltsov scored the game-tying
goal with 4:32 remaining in the second period for Pittsburgh, as the Penguins
and Buffalo skated to a 2-2 tie at Mellon Arena.
Rico Fata scored Pittsburgh's other goal, as the Penguins won for the fourth
time in their last five contests (4-1-0). Milan Kraft added two assists in the
winning effort. Sebastien Caron made 26 saves on 28 shots faced for the
Penguins.
Chris Drury and Jean-Pierre Dumont both lit the lamp for Buffalo, which had
its three-game winning streak snapped. Martin Biron stopped 37 shots, as the
Sabres gained a point and moved within five of the New York Islanders for the
eighth spot in the Eastern Conference standings. The Islanders lost at home to
Carolina earlier in the night.
"It's tough to not get the two points," Sabres forward Mike Grier said. "Now
we're pretty much going to have to win them all and still get at least another
two losses from the Islanders. We had some chances."
Both teams were playing for the second time in as many nights, as the Sabres
defeated Pittsburgh 5-1 Friday night in Buffalo.
Koltsov tied it at the 15:28 mark of the second when he took a pass from Tom
Kostopoulos in the bottom of the right circle and fired a snap shot that beat
Biron glove side for his ninth of the season.
"We battled hard, and we have been doing that all season," Pittsburgh head
coach Ed Olczyk said. "We knew it would be a great test for us, a great
challenge for us to play against a team that is still in it."
Biron had a busy third period as the Penguins peppered him with 13 shots, but
could not get any past him. Caron had an easier 20 minutes as he only took on
three shots and turned them all aside.
The Penguins had a chance to pull out the win in the final seconds of the
overtime, as Aleksey Morzov fired a slapper on net. Biron made the initial
save and followed by stopping Ryan Malone's rebound attempt with his stick as
the clock ran out.
With the tie, Buffalo remained winless in Pittsburgh in its last seven games
(0-5-2).
Drury scored the game's first goal with 13:53 gone by in the first period, as
the Buffalo forward skated into the middle of the left circle and beat Caron
stick side with a wrister. It was Drury's 18th of the season.
The Sabres went up 2-0 with 2:24 remaining in the opening frame on Dumont's
one-timer from the lower part of the right circle on the power play. The goal
was Dumont's 21st of the season, as he tied a career-high for points in a
season with 51.
Fata brought the Penguins within 2-1 at the 7:22 mark of the second period on
the power play, as he skated into the slot and redirected Kraft's wrist shot
past Biron.
