NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at NY Islanders

(Sunday, March 21st)

Final Score: NY Islanders 3, Tampa Bay 0

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Rick DiPietro made 29 saves for his fourth shutout of the season, as the New York Islanders cooled off the surging Tampa Bay Lightning with a 3-0 win at Nassau Coliseum.

Adrian Aucoin had a goal and an assist for the Islanders, who sit eighth in the Eastern Conference race with 82 points -- six ahead of the idle Buffalo Sabres for the final playoff spot. Mark Parrish and Michael Peca also scored as New York posted its second straight win and fourth in five tries.

"We're relying on ourselves doing the job," Peca said of New York's playoff push.

DiPietro was solid between the pipes. He made nine stops in the first period, eight in the second and turned aside 12 more in the third period for his fourth career shutout.

John Grahame was in net for the Lightning and stopped 22 of the 25 shots he faced. Grahame filled in for regular starter Nikolai Khabibulin, who had the day off.

Tampa Bay still leads the Eastern Conference with 97 points and idle Philadelphia is just one point behind. The Lightning have lost four of their last five games (1-4-0), but are 11-4-1 in their last 16.

DiPietro made an excellent stop on a breakaway by Vincent Lecavalier with about six minutes left in the first period.

"We're getting spectacular goaltending, and that just breeds confidence," Peca added.

New York later had its chance and made the best of it as Parrish netted his 19th goal with 1:56 remaining in the period. Parrish trailed Arron Asham through the Tampa zone and blasted a drop pass from the right circle just inside the left post for his sixth goal in 10 games.

After a scoreless second period, the Islanders extended their lead on Peca's 11th goal of the season with 8:19 left in the third. Peca took control of a Martin St. Louis turnover and skated in on a 2-on-1 with Mattias Weinhandl. Peca was along the right boards and fired the puck over Graham's glove.

Aucoin's tally minutes later gave New York a 3-0 advantage. Alexei Yashin was denied on a point shot but Aucoin deposited the rebound into an empty for his sixth goal with 5:33 on the clock.

The Islanders have now won three straight against Tampa Bay.

"We obviously match up well with these guys," Peca said of a possible playoff showdown with the Lightning.
