NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Pittsburgh |
(Saturday, March 6th)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 2, Anaheim 1
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Ric Jackman and Matt Bradley scored first-
period goals, helping the Pittsburgh Penguins post their first home win in
over two months with a 2-1 victory over Anaheim.
Andy Chiodo rebounded from a disastrous performance which saw him surrender
nine goals on Thursday night with 26 saves for the Penguins, who last won at
home on December 29. Pittsburgh hadn't won at the Igloo in its previous 16
homes games (0-15-1).
"I was pretty excited to get back in net," Chiodo said. "I was a little
nervous to put on a good performance after (Thursday night)."
Steve Rucchin scored the lone goal for Anaheim in the loss, a costly defeat
that hurts the Mighty Ducks' current playoff push. Anaheim, which had its
three-game winning streak come to an end, entered the game six points behind
Los Angeles for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference.
Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 26 for the Mighty Ducks, who had won their
previous three contests against Pittsburgh.
"Here we are in a must-win situation and we didn't handle it like you have
to," Mighty Ducks head coach Mike Babcock explained.
Jackman got the Penguins on the board early with a power-play goal. He took a
Dick Tarnstrom pass in the slot and deposited the puck into the net for his
seventh goal of the campaign, staking Pittsburgh to a 1-0 lead just 2:24 into
Bradley then doubled the Penguins' advantage when he skated in on a 2-on-1 and
ripped a slap shot over the glove of Giguere. The goal came at the 12:12 mark
of the first period and eventually proved to be the game-winner.
Despite being completely dominated throughout the opening 20 minutes, the
Ducks went into the locker room down just 2-1. Rucchin's was able to slam home
a rebound with just 10 seconds to play in the first to make it a one-goal
Pittsburgh held a commanding 12-4 shots on goal advantage after one period of
Chiodo needed to deny just six shots in the second period before stepping up
to make 17 saves in the third. Chiodo was called upon to stop several point-
blank opportunities in the final stanza, helping Pittsburgh get the monkey off
its back with the rare home win.
"As the game went on I felt better and better, and obviously when you are up
one in the third, you have to bear down," Chiodo said.
