(Saturday, March 6th)
Final Score: Vancouver 4, Columbus 0
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Johan Hedberg stopped 32 shots for his third
shutout of the season and Markus Naslund notched a goal and an assist, as the
Vancouver Canucks pounded the Columbus Blue Jackets, 4-0, at Nationwide Arena.
Mattias Ohlund, Matt Cooke and Tyler Bouck each scored for Vancouver, which
won for the fourth time in six games (4-1-1). Todd Bertuzzi added two assists
for the Canucks.
"Every game you get to play, you get more and more used to playing in game
situations," Hedberg said. "Right now it's fun to play hockey."
Marc Denis stopped 20 shots for the Blue Jackets, who lost their second
straight after a three-game winning streak.
"We should have had two goals early," Columbus interim head coach Gerard
Gallant said. "We didn't do anything after that."
The Canucks cruised to the victory, despite not getting a shot on goal until
nearly 12 minutes into the game.
Ohlund got the Canucks on the board first, scoring his 12th goal of the season
at the 13:39 mark of the first period. Naslund came around the back of the
net, stopped, and found Ohlund near the crease. Ohlund caught Denis covering
the wrong post and made him pay.
Vancouver grabbed firm control of the game with two goals in the second
The first was Cooke's seventh of the season, coming at the 4:42 mark of the
second. Henrik Sedin passed from the corner out to his brother Daniel at the
right circle. Daniel then found Cooke waiting outside the left circle near the
crease, and he whipped a shot past Denis on the stickside.
The Canucks grabbed a three-goal lead with just under nine minutes to play in
the stanza. Bertuzzi threaded the needle with a perfect pass from the right
boards through traffic to a streaking Naslund, cruising toward the net to the
left the slot. He easily redirected the pass past a helpless Denis for the 3-0
Bouck made it 4-0 only 1:03 into the third on his first tally of the campaign.
Mike Keane stole the puck behind the net, wheeled out and found Bouck moving
into the high slot. Sedin paused to gather the puck, then beat Denis with a
wrister inside the right post.
