NHL Game Summary - Columbus at Carolina

(Tuesday, March 2nd)

Final Score: Columbus 3, Carolina 0

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Marc Denis made 25 saves for his fourth shutout of the season to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 3-0 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at the RBC Center.

Rick Nash, Trevor Letowski and Manny Malhotra scored for the Blue Jackets, who have won three straight games for the first time since October.

"I thought we played a good solid road game tonight and we got some breaks," said Blue Jackets coach Gerard Gallant. "We scored a quick power-play goal early in the first, then we got a lucky goal when Letowski went to the goal. It's good - it's good for our confidence and it's good for our hockey team."

Kevin Weekes stopped 14-of-17 shots for Carolina, which is winless in its last three games (0-2-1).

Nash scored on a power play just 1:12 into the first period to give the Blue Jackets the lead. After collecting a loose puck along the right-wing boards, Nash skated into the slot and beat Weekes to the stick side with a blistering wrist shot.

"We had three chances to get the puck out, we failed all three times," said Carolina coach Peter Laviolette. "We didn't execute and we got beat by it."

Columbus opened a 2-0 lead on Letowski's goal with just 1:36 remaining in the opening period. Letowski redirected a shot by Jaroslav Spacek past Weekes, who allowed two goals on seven shots in the opening stanza.

Denis stopped all 10 shots fired his way in the opening 20 minutes.

Carolina's Erik Cole hit the far post with a blast from the left circle early in the second period before Malhotra gave the Blue Jackets a three-goal cushion.

Alexander Svitov carried the puck into the Carolina zone on the right wing and dropped a pass to Nikolai Zherdev at the top of the circle. Zherdev found Malhotra alone in front for a goal that gave Columbus a 3-0 lead at 17:31 of the middle frame.
