NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Montreal |
(Saturday, February 28th)
Final Score: Montreal 1, Carolina 0 (OT)
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Mike Ribeiro's goal with 1:22 remaining in
overtime snapped a scoreless tie and gave the Montreal Canadiens a 1-0 victory
over Carolina at the Bell Centre.
Jose Theodore turned aside 18 shots for his sixth shutout of the season and
the 23rd of his career. Montreal, which has won four straight games, hadn't
been tied 0-0 at the end of regulation since a February 11, 1993 game against
"We knew that today wasn't going to be easy against those guys," Ribeiro said.
"They've really been playing better and giving a full effort for 60 minutes,
and that's what they did [tonight]."
Kevin Weekes was stellar in net for the Hurricanes, who had a two-game win
streak snapped. He made 31 saves in regulation, but was beat on the only shot
in overtime by either club.
The Hurricanes have been shutout five times this season, but this was their
first blanking since a red-hot Brian Boucher turned the trick against them on
January 4 -- his third consecutive shutout for Phoenix in that amazing NHL
record streak of five in a row.
Carolina was just 1:22 away from its second scoreless tie of the season, but
Ribeiro finally found the back of the net. He was set up well by teammate
Andrei Markov, who sent a pass to the far side of Weekes from below the left
circle. Ribeiro was there for the one-timer and his 17th goal of the season.
"[Markov] gave me one in the first period and I missed an open net, but I told
him that if he gave me another one, I wouldn't miss," Ribeiro said.
Before overtime, Carolina's Craig Adams had the earliest good chance during an
action-packed third period, but his wraparound backhand was stopped by
Theodore's left pad just inside the 15 minute mark.
Canadiens forward Pierre Dagenais had an opportunity at the other end five
minutes later, but was unable to poke a rebound past Weekes on a power play. A
flurry followed in front of the net, but Dagenais was whistled for a holding
Montreal killed off the ensuing power play, and got another man advantage of
its own in the final minutes of play.
But that opportunity was squandered when captain Saku Koivu hooked Carolina
forward Kevyn Adams as Adams was on a shorthanded break. Adams nearly scored
on the play, but his attempt was thwarted by Theodore with 40 seconds left.
That left a 4-on-4 skating situation that bled into the overtime. Carolina
then went on a power play that lasted 1:11 into the extra session.
Carolina skated to a 0-0 tie against Tampa Bay in November...The Hurricanes
are just 9-15-4-2 on foreign ice this season and 3-4-12 in 19 overtime
games...The Canadiens are 4-1-2-1 in their last eight meetings with the
Hurricanes and 5-2-0-1 in their last eight home tilts against them.
