Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Kip Miller scored the eventual game-winner with
less than nine minutes remaining, as the Washington Capitals rattled off four
unanswered third-period goals for a 4-1 victory over the Florida Panthers and
red-hot goaltender Roberto Luongo.
Brian Willsie scored the Capitals' first goal early in the third period,
snapping Luongo's team-record shutout streak of 182 minutes and 37 seconds.
Luongo, who finished with 25 saves on 28 shots, had posted two consecutive
shutouts and three in four outings before this game.
Alexander Semin and Mike Grier scored the other Washington goals.
Olaf Kolzig made 28 saves for the victory, which snapped the Capitals' three-
game winless streak (0-2-1) on a day when they continued to unload their big-
Washington shipped forward Robert Lang to Detroit earlier Friday for junior
prospect Tomas Fleischmann, a first-round pick in 2004 and a fourth-round
selection in 2006. Lang is tied for the NHL scoring lead this season with 74

said of Washington's effort without Lang. "Those guys get paychecks too.
They're going to come out and work hard every night too."
Florida had a five-game unbeaten streak snapped (3-0-2) and fell to 6-3-2 in
its last 11 games.
Luongo turned aside 11 shots in a scoreless first period, and Mike Van Ryn
gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at 11:22 of the second with a power play goal.
His slap shot from above the right circle was deflected by a pair of
defenders' sticks before beating Kolzig stick-side.
Luongo made seven saves in the second period, but his scoreless streak fell to
pieces as Washington ran away with the game in the third period.
Willsie struck first 4:47 into the stanza, receiving a pass from Michael
Nylander in the slot after a Washington turnover behind the net. He scored
easily with a one-timer.
"The turnovers kind of got us in trouble," Torchetti said.
Miller then gave the Caps the lead at 11:19, poking home a rebound from the
left of Luongo for his sixth of the season.
Semin put the game out of reach with an unassisted tally just over five
minutes later, poking the puck free behind Luongo before beating him with a
Grier added an empty-netter with 10 seconds remaining to cap the scoring.
Luongo snapped his old team record shutout streak of 160:05, which he set last
week...The Capitals are 7-2-3 in the last 12 overall meetings with
Florida...Florida ended 1-for-3 on the power play while holding Washington
scoreless on two man advantage opportunities.
