(Monday, January 26th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 5, Florida 2
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr scored a goal and assisted on two
others in his Madison Square Garden debut, lifting the New York Rangers to a
5-2 victory over the Florida Panthers.
Brian Leetch added a goal and an assist for New York, while Jussi Markannen
made 38 saves. The Rangers, who were embarrassed 9-1 in Jagr's debut with the
club on Saturday at Ottawa, snapped a four-game losing streak.
"It's kind of a big relief for me," said Jagr. "I said before I came here,
there was only one goal, to help this team. Nothing personal, just to help the
team. I'm glad we did it tonight and hopefully we can continue and get on a
Mark Messier, Petr Nedved and Matthew Barnaby also scored in the victory.
Kristian Huselius and Byron Ritchie scored for Florida, which had a two-game
winning streak stopped. Roberto Luongo finished with 33 saves in defeat.
"You're not going to win every game you play in the NHL, but the New York
Rangers are a talented team, and they played hard tonight," said Panthers head
coach Rick Dudley.
Jagr, who was acquired from Washington last Friday, set up Leetch's go-ahead
goal with 2:56 left in the second period and scored the eventual game-winner
early in the third.
With the game tied at 1-1, the five-time league scoring champ sent the puck
from below the right circle to Leetch, who made a neat move around Florida's
Juraj Kolnik in the circle and snapped a shot past Luongo for his 10th goal.
Jagr then backhanded home the rebound of an Eric Lindros shot just 33 seconds
into the third for his 17th goal of the season to give New York a 3-1 lead.
"I thought he played as well I've seen him play," Rangers head coach Glen
Sather said about Jagr.
The Panthers pulled within one just 1:20 later when Ritchie knocked in the
rebound of an Eric Beaudoin shot for his fifth goal.
The Rangers, though, scored twice late to put it away.
Nedved netted his 12th with 3:26 left in the contest, working a give-and-go
with Chris Simon and scoring on a shot from the right circle.
Barnaby then took a pass from Jagr and scored into an empty net in the closing
Markannen stopped 19-of-20 shots in the third period for New York.
After a scoreless first period, Huselius gave the Panthers a 1-0 lead at 9:03
of the second. Jagr turned the puck over on a hit by Darcy Hordichuk and
Niklas Hagman raced the other way for Florida. Hagman dropped a pass for
Huselius, whose shot from above the left circle deflected off Ranger
defenseman Boris Mironov before going through Markannen's pads.
The Rangers tied it just 1:19 later on Messier's 14th goal. Leetch dumped the
puck into the Florida zone and Jed Ortmyer outraced the Panther defenders
behind the net to negate an icing. Ortmyer skated into the right circle and
sent a pass in front for Messier, who quickly one-timed a shot home.
"There were some very, very dangerous plays around our net," Dudley said.
The Rangers are 2-0-1 against Florida this season and 8-1-1 in the last 10
meetings...Lindros has a point in six of his last seven games.
