Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Jeremy Roenick scored two goals to lead
Philadelphia over Buffalo, 2-1, at the Wachovia Center.
Robert Esche made 25 saves for the Flyers, who won their second straight and
fourth in the past five games.
"(Esche) was the reason we were able to win the hockey game," Roenick said.
Ales Kotalik lit the lamp for the Sabres, who have dropped four of their last
five. Buffalo is just 3-6-2 in its last 11 games overall.
Just 3:19 into the game, Roenick opened the scoring with his 17th goal of the
season. Roenick broke free in front of the net and tapped in a pass from Mike
"It was a great play by Michael to put in back on the net and I was fortunate
to get my stick on it," Roenick said.
But only 1:03 into the second frame, Kotalik tied the game at 1-1 for
Buffalo with a slap shot from the right circle.
"(Esche) let a goal in he knows he can stop and then he shut the door," said
Flyers head coach Ken Hitchcock.
Roenick posted the game-winner at 9:05 of the second when he one-timed a pass
from Mark Recchi from the bottom of the left circle.
Mika Noronen stopped 20 shots for Buffalo, which outshot Philadelphia 12-4 in
a scoreless third stanza.
The Flyers failed to score with three power-play chances, while the Sabres
were 0-of-3 on the man advantage.
Philadelphia is 19-1-2 when leading after two periods.
Philly will open a three-game road trip Sunday in Washington... The Sabres
will visit Carolina on Sunday to cap off a five-game road trip...Philadelphia
is 2-1-1 against Buffalo this season, after a 2-2 mark last campaign.
