Final Score: Florida 2, Tampa Bay 1
Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Olli Jokinen snapped a scoreless tie early in
the third period and added the game-winner with less than six minutes
remaining, as Florida held on for a 2-1 victory over Tampa Bay at the Office
"I thought Olli was great tonight," Panthers coach Rick Dudley explained.
Roberto Luongo turned aside 50 of Tampa Bay's franchise-record 51 shots in the
victory, which snapped Florida's three-game winless streak (0-2-1).
The Panthers set a season-low with just 15 shots, but came through when they
John Grahame turned aside 13 of those tries for the Lightning, who had their
five-game winning streak halted.
Jokinen's first of the game made it 1-0 at 5:48 of the third period. His
wrister from the point gave the Panthers some momentum, but Martin St. Louis
came right back and scored 49 seconds later to tie the game.
However, Jokinen came through again with 5:13 remaining in the period, using
traffic in front to screen his slap shot from the left circle. It was his 14th
goal of the season.
Through two scoreless periods, Florida had just nine shots on goal compared to
34 for the Lightning. Luongo made 20 saves in the second period alone, while
Grahame faced just four shots in the first period and five in the second.
"First of all, if the goaltender plays as well as 'Louie' did the first two
periods and doesn't get anything out of it, it's got to be devastating. But he
was able to play a brilliant game and we were able to at least salvage the two
points for him," Dudley said of his goaltender's performance.
Which is not to say that Grahame didn't make a couple of key saves, including
a stop on Florida forward Valeri Bure's breakaway in the first period.
