NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Detroit

(Friday, January 16th)

Final Score: Detroit 3, Phoenix 3

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Henrik Zetterberg scored with 1:44 left in regulation to lift the Detroit Red Wings into a 3-3 tie with the Phoenix Coyotes at Joe Louis Arena.

Kris Draper and Chris Chelios also scored for the Red Wings, who have just one win in their last four games (1-1-1-1). Curtis Joseph made 27 saves, including 12 in the third period, for Detroit.

Fredrik Sjostrom had a goal and an assist, and Brian Savage and Daymond Langkow also tallied. Brian Boucher stopped 31 shots, including five in the extra session for the Coyotes, who haven't won in four games (0-2-2).

However, the Coyotes are unbeaten in their last 10 games (5-0-5) as the visitor.

After a mad scramble in front, Pavel Datsyuk poked the puck toward the right side of the net under a falling defenseman in the final two minutes of regulation. Zetterberg collected the puck at the right side of the net, brought it to the backhand and slid it inside the right post for the equalizer.

"It squirted loose and that's unfortunate," said Coyotes head coach Bob Francis. "You come into Detroit and you get a point...you can't argue with that. Unfortunately, we had the lead and we let it get away."

Detroit had numerous scoring chances in overtime, but Boucher answered the call every time.

"It was an exciting game," said Boucher. "But we didn't come here to put on a show. We came here to get two points."

Phoenix got on the scoreboard first in the waning moments of the first period. Savage continued his hot play with his 10th goal of the year, his third in three games, with 28 seconds to play in the stanza. Savage skated into the zone alone, fired on net, got his own rebound and scored inside the right post.

But Detroit would quickly tie it up in the second period, as Draper scored his 19th of the season just 30 seconds in. He deflected a Lidstrom slapshot from the left point past Boucher to make it 1-1. The 19 goals is already a career- high for the 13-year veteran, topping his previous best by four.

Steve Yzerman got the second assist on Draper's goal for his 1,700th career NHL point.

The Red Wings took the lead just over three minutes later when Chelios, set up at the right point, cranked a slapshot that stayed low to the ice. Boucher was screened, and never really got a good look at the puck, and it went right through the five-hole for the go-ahead goal.

Phoenix got it even again at 2-2 at the 9:28 mark on Langkow's goal. Cale Hulse ripped a wrist shot from left point that Langkow deflected over Joseph's glove for the goal.

The Coyotes took the lead less than two minutes later, when Mathieu Dandenault lost the puck off shaft of his stick in his defensive zone. Sjostrom collected the turnover, skated in alone and beat Joseph with a backhander to give Phoenix the edge for the next seven minutes.
