Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Tommy Salo made 28 saves to record his second
shutout of the season and 36th of his career, as the Edmonton Oilers blanked
the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 1-0, at Rexall Place.
"Tommy played great, especially in the second period when they had a couple of
power plays," stated Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish.
Ales Hemsky scored the game's only goal to help the Oilers win their second
Ethan Moreau assisted on Hemsky's 10th goal of the season, helping Edmonton
continue its dominance over Anaheim. The win was the Oilers' sixth straight
over the Mighty Ducks and 11th in 13 tries (11-1-1). Edmonton also won its
ninth straight over Anaheim in Alberta.
Martin Gerber made 15 saves in the losing effort for the Mighty Ducks, who
remained winless in their last eight games (0-5-3). Anaheim has not won yet
this year, posting its last victory on December 31 at Carolina.
Hemsky scored the game's lone goal with a pretty finish late in the opening
stanza. With 5:57 remaining in the period, Moreau lofted a pass to Hemsky at
the Ducks' blue line. The Anaheim defender got a piece of the puck, but the
disc caromed on edge to the streaking Hemsky, who chipped the puck over Gerber
and into the top of the net.
"It was nice to score and bring some of my confidence back. The puck was
bouncing and I just snapped it," Hemsky explained of the tally.
As solid as Salo was in the first period when he made seven saves, he was even
more impressive in the second stanza. The active goaltender, who also shutout
the Philadelphia Flyers on Saturday, stopped all 13 shots that came his way in
the second period. He then sent back all eight shots he faced in the final
stanza to preserve the shutout and the victory for Edmonton.
The shutout was the second in four games for Salo...Hemsky scored his first
goal in 10 games while recording his third game-winning goal of the
season...Edmonton is 13-0-0 when leading after two periods of play...Anaheim
fell to 1-16-2-0 when trailing after two.
