Denver, CO (Sports Network) - David Aebischer turned aside all 35 shots he
faced for his ninth career shutout, as the Colorado Avalanche pounded the
Columbus Blue Jackets, 6-0, at the Pepsi Center.
Paul Kariya, who was suffering from a sprained wrist, played in his first game
since November 15 and was one of six different Colorado players to score in
Joe Sakic, Rob Blake and Dan Hinote each posted a goal and an assist, while
Karlis Skrastins and Peter Worrell also tallied for the Avalanche, who have
won four straight games for the first time this season.
Fred Brathwaite started between the pipes and allowed four goals on 29 shots
in two periods of play for the Blue Jackets, who have lost five of their last
six. Columbus was shut out for the second straight game following a 1-0 loss

After a scoreless opening period, Blake started the scoring with a slapshot
from the right circle just 38 seconds into the middle stanza. It was his
10th goal of the campaign.
Shortly after, Hinote took a pass from behind the net and buried a one-timer
from the slot at 2:03 for a two-goal lead.
With 7:04 gone in the second, Skrastins made it 3-0. Brathwaite could not find
the puck during a scramble in front of the Columbus goal, before Skrastins
skated in and tapped the disc into the net for his second goal of 2003-04.
The fourth and final goal of the second period came with 5:17 remaining. Blake
took a shot from the point and Kariya was near the goal mouth to deflect it
home. The goal was Kariya's fourth of the season and first since October 18.
Denis then came on for the final period, but he let up two goals in a 17-
second span near the end of the game.
First, Peter Forsberg hustled down the left-wing side and fed a pass to the
slot to Sakic, whose one-timer found the back of the net for his 17th goal of
the season with 4:33 to go.
Worrell's wrister just 17 ticks later completed the scoring.
The Avalanche are now 5-1-2 in their last eight games overall and improved to
12-7-2 at home this season...The Blue Jackets are now 1-2 under new head coach
Gerard Gallant, who assumed head coaching duties when president/GM Doug
MacLean relinquished the bench job last week...The Blue Jackets have just two
victories in their last 16 contests (2-11-1-2)...Colorado remained unbeaten
all-time versus the Blue Jackets in 14 matchups (13-0-1) and have outscored
Columbus 61-16 in those games...The Blue Jackets were 0-for-7 on the power
play, while the Avalanche went 1-for-2 with the man advantage...Earlier
Tuesday, Columbus recalled Mark Hartigan from the Syracuse of the American
Hockey League...Colorado forward Jim Cummins left the game with a neck injury,
while Columbus defenseman Darryl Sydor did not return after exiting the
contest with a mouth injury.
