NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Carolina

(Sunday, January 4th)

Final Score: Phoenix 3, Carolina 0

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) -Brian Boucher recorded his third consecutive shutout, stopping 26 shots as the Phoenix Coyotes blanked the Carolina Hurricanes, 3-0, at RBC Center.

Boucher, coming off a brilliant performance Friday night when he stopped 35 shots against Dallas, was facing a team in Carolina that has been offensively inept of late. The Hurricanes have scored just 13 goals in their last 11 games.

Boucher posted his first shutout of the streak in a 4-0 win over the Kings in Phoenix on December 31. Nikolai Khabibulin was the last netminder for the Coyotes to post three straight shutouts, as he accomplished the feat back in March of 1997.

Ladislav Nagy, Jan Hrdina and Paul Mara each scored goals for the Coyotes, who have won three straight games. Branko Radivojevic assisted on all three goals for Phoenix, which has won its last two games against Carolina.

Jamie Storr stopped 20 shots for Carolina, which has dropped three straight contests.

There was little action in the first stanza as neither team was able to get on the scoreboard. Phoenix would then strike for three goals in the final two periods to take control of the contest, starting with Nagy's goal just 3:25 into the second stanza.

Nagy was skating toward the net and re-directed a pass from Radivojevic for the tip-in. Radivojevic had the puck on the left side and skated toward the net while winding up for a shot. Caron committed to his right thinking shot, but Radivojevic fed a wide-open Nagy, who pushed the puck into the net.

The Coyotes would strike again when Hrdina lit the lamp at the 14:19 mark of the second stanza.

Radivojevic contributed once again for Phoenix with an assist. The right winger blasted a shot from the right side of the blue line that was blocked by Storr. However, Storr did not make a clean save on the shot and the puck bounced off the netminder's leg pad, allowing a streaking Hrdina to stuff home the rebound for the two-goal advantage.

Mara's tally at the 12:29 mark of the final period finished the Coyotes scoring.

Boucher remained steady throughout, stopping nine shots in each of the first two periods before denying eight Carolina attempts on goal in the final stanza to preserve the shutout.
