Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Andrei Markov and Pierre Dagenais both scored
in the first period to lead Montreal to a 2-1 win over Atlanta at Philips
Jose Theodore made 26 saves for the Canadiens, who won for the first time in
three games and improved to 6-1-2 all-time in Atlanta. Patrice Brisebois
notched two assists.
Ronald Petrovicky scored for the Thrashers, who suffered their second straight
loss. Byron Dafoe stopped 26 shots.
Montreal, which held a 14-7 shot advantage in the first period, took a 2-0
Markov opened the scoring with 3:39 remaining in the first, on a slap shot
from the right faceoff circle. Brisebois and Saku Koivu set up the goal.
Dagenais scored on a rebound of a shot from the slot by Richard Zednik, whose
short wrister deflected off Dafoe. Dagenais reached in the crease and slapped
the puck into the net with 13.6 seconds to go.
Atlanta pulled within 2-1 on a slap shot by Petrovicky from between the
circles with 9:42 left in the second period.
In the third period, the Thrashers held a 13-7 shot advantage. They managed a
2-on-1, while killing off a five-minute power play after an elbowing major
against Marc Savard, with 2:25 to go. But Theodore saved a wrist shot by Ilya
Brisebois registered his third multi-point game of the season for Montreal,
which is 12-3-2-0 overall against the Thrashers...Savard and Frantisek Kaberle
assisted Atlanta's goal...The Habs finished 0-for-4 on the power play, while
Atlanta failed in three attempts with the extra skater.
