NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Washington

(Saturday, December 13th)

Final Score: Detroit 5, Washington 1

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Pavel Datsyuk scored twice and added two assists as the Detroit Red Wings rolled to a 5-1 win over the Washington Capitals at the MCI Center. Curtis Joseph made 18 saves for the Red Wings, who have won three of four.

Jaromir Jagr scored the lone goal for the Capitals, who are now 1-1 under new head coach Glen Hanlon.

Brendan Shanahan gave Detroit a 2-1 lead just after a power play expired at 10:20 of the second period. From just outside the crease, Shanahan one-timed Datsyuk's feed from the left circle past Olaf Kolzig for his 13th goal of the season.

Datsyuk scored a quirky power-play goal to give the Red Wings a 3-1 lead at 13:32 of the middle frame. Datsyuk gathered up the puck to the right of the net along the extended goal line and tried to get a pass through the crease to Shanahan. However, the Capitals' Jason Doig -- trying to deflect the pass from its intended route -- wound up putting it into his own net to give Datsyuk his 16th goal of the season.

Another odd play cost Detroit from taking a three-goal lead less than two minutes later. Brett Hull was hooked on a short-handed breakaway and awarded a penalty shot with 4:56 left in the second period. But Hull did not even get a shot on net as he lost control of the puck trying to put one last move on Kolzig.

Hull finished with a pair of assists in the contest.

The Red Wings sealed the victory with goals by Jason Williams and Datsyuk in the third. Williams put a backhander in from a sharp angle to the left of the net at 7:10 of the period, while Datsyuk scored on a slap shot from between the circles with 5:40 remaining.

Kolzig made 21 saves in the loss.

Washington took a 1-0 lead at 13:37 of the first period on Jagr's 12th goal of the season. Jagr beat Joseph over his left shoulder with a backhander from the low left circle.

But just 18 seconds later, Detroit's Kris Draper tied it at 1-1 with his 13th of the year. Taking a cross-ice feed from Datsyuk, Draper scored on a slap shot from the left circle.
