(Saturday, December 13th)
Final Score: NY Islanders 4, Atlanta 0
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Trent Hunter's goal set-off a flurry of four-
unanswered third-period tallies, as the New York Islanders erased a scoreless
tie to defeat Atlanta, 4-0, at Nassau Coliseum.
Garth Snow needed just 18 saves for his first shutout of the season and 16th
of his career. Shawn Bates, Alexei Yashin and Michael Peca also scored for the
Islanders, who are 3-0-0-1 since a seven-game losing streak.
After more than 51 scoreless minutes, Hunter finally opened the scoring with a
nice solo effort in the Atlanta zone. He corralled a loose puck in the left
corner and skated along the goal line before beating Pasi Nurminen for a 1-0
lead at 11:15 of the third.
Bates made it 2-0 minutes later when he ended up wide-open in the slot after a
nice give-and-go, beating Nurminen at 14:00 with his seventh of the season.
Yashin put the game away with a power-play goal at 17:14, his ninth, and Peca
ended the scoring with an empty-net tally in the final minute.
Nurminen turned aside 25 of the 28 shots he faced, including 14 in a fast-
paced first period.
The Islanders are 6-2-1 in their last nine meetings with Atlanta...The
Thrashers, who were 0-for-4 on the power play, had won two straight at Nassau
Coliseum coming in...New York finished just 1-for-8 with the extra skater.
