NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Tampa Bay

(Thursday, December 4th)

Final Score: Ottawa 4, Tampa Bay 1

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Jason Spezza scored twice and Martin Prusek made 29 saves, as the Ottawa Senators downed the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-1, at the St. Pete Times Forum.

Brian Smolinski also tallied for Ottawa, which won its third straight game. The Senators return home on Saturday for a rematch of the 2003 Eastern Conference Finals with the New Jersey Devils. Antoine Vermette added an empty- netter in the victory.

Dave Andreychuk produced the only goal for the Lightning, who are winless in their last six contests (0-4-2). Tampa Bay netminder John Grahame turned aside 22 shots.

The second period saw Ottawa gain a 2-1 lead on Spezza's ninth goal of the campaign. Marian Hossa skated with the puck through the crease and put a backhander on goal, but it caromed off the right post directly to Spezza, who punched home the rebound at 15:31.

Spezza's second tally of the contest, a breakaway on which he lasered the puck up high past Grahame with 13:26 to go in regulation, gave the Senators a commanding two-goal lead.

Tampa failed to produce many scoring chances in the third period as it recorded just four shots on goal. In the final minute, the Lightning pulled Grahame in favor of the extra skater before Vermette's first NHL goal into the vacated net created the final margin.

The Senators opened the scoring at 11:38 of the first period. After Dan Boyle went to the penalty box for hooking, it took the visitors just 22 seconds to score on the power play. Daniel Alfredsson took his usual post at the center point and blasted a slapshot that Smolinski deflected past Grahame. The goal, Smolinski's fifth of the season, was also assisted by Wade Redden.

However, the Lightning evened the contest less than two minutes later. Skating 5-on-4, Andreychuk corralled the puck behind the net and attempted a stuffer at the right post. The disc deflected off of Prusek's pads and went into the net with 6:24 to go in the stanza.
