Final Score: NY Rangers 4, NY Islanders 2
Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Brian Leetch scored twice as the New York
Rangers posted a 4-2 win over their slumping crosstown rivals, the Islanders,
in a scrappy contest at Nassau Coliseum.
The Rangers took advantage of a costly major penalty called against Islander
captain Michael Peca in the middle period, scoring twice during the five-
minute kneeing penalty to take a commanding 3-0 lead. Leetch and Anson Carter
each scored on that man advantage for the Rangers, who bounced back with the
win on the heels of getting swept in a home-and-home series with the Toronto
Martin Rucinsky also scored and Mike Dunham made 37 saves, as the Rangers
improved to 4-2-1 in their last seven games.

Leetch scored both of his goals in the second period, the first coming 4:15
into the period, the only even strength goal of the contest. After some
solid work behind the net, the puck found its way to Eric Lindros at the
right boards deep in the Islander zone. The center then spotted Leetch
streaking toward the net. Leetch easily placed the puck into the Islander net
as Rick DiPietro had no chance to get over in time to deny the shot.
DiPietro denied just 12 of the 16 shots he faced for the Islanders, who have
been outscored 26-7 during their seven-game skid.
The questionable call against Peca turned the tide of the game, as the Rangers
scored twice during the five-minute major to open a 3-0 lead.
Leetch's second goal of the contest came early in the power play, as he skated
in and fired a wrist shot from the slot into the upper left-hand corner of the
net at 10:23 of the second.
Carter notched his sixth goal of the campaign a little less than three minutes
later when he took a beautiful pass from Vladimir Malakhov and skated in on a
breakaway. Carter then beat DiPietro five-hole to open a three-goal cushion.
Down 3-0 early in the final period the Islanders had a goal disallowed. The
referee ruled that the net moved off the moorings before the puck crossed the
The disallowed goal proved costly for the Islanders, who continued to apply
pressure and came away with two goals in a 43 second span in the third period.
Niinimaa scored the first on the power play with 8:45 left to play. He fired a
shot from the point through a screen and just inside the left post, making it
a 3-1 game.
Yashin scored less than a minute later when he fired a shot from the slot
through the legs of Dunham to pull the Islanders within 3-2.
