Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Dmitri Kalinin and Maxim Afinogenov scored in
the third period and Buffalo held on for a 3-2 win over Chicago at the United
Daniel Briere also scored for the Sabres and Mika Noronen stopped 22 shots for
Buffalo, which won for the third time in four games.
Bryan Berard and Brett McLean both scored for the Blackhawks, who had their
winless streak extended to 12 games (0-8-1-3). They played for the first time
without forward Eric Daze, who underwent back surgery Wednesday.
Kalinin and Briere both finished with a goal and an assist for Buffalo, which
snapped a 1-1 tie with two goals in the third.
Kalinin registered his fourth goal of the season 1:29 into the period. Ales
Kotalik slid a pass to the crease, where Kalinin gathered the puck and scored
on a wrister.
Afinogenov slammed home a rebound past Mike Leighton with 7:47 remaining in
Leighton finished with 25 saves in goal for Chicago.
The Blackhawks pulled the goaltender and converted with less than two minutes
to go to get within 3-2. McLean scored from the low slot near the right
goalpost, but Chicago would get no closer.
Briere put the Sabres ahead 1-0 at 10:53 of the second period. Jean-Pierre
Dumont fed a pass to the blue line, where Briere collected the puck, skated in
and converted on a stuffer.
Berard forged a 1-1 tie 2:06 later for Chicago. Positioned near the right
goalpost, Berard took a pass from Mikhail Yakubov and scored on a short wrist
Curtis Brown played in his 500th career game for the Sabres, who posted their
first win over Chicago since October 28, 2000...The Blackhawks fell to 3-4-1-2
on home ice...Chicago went 0-for-4 on the power play.
