Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Kimmo Timonen registered a goal and an assist,
as the Nashville Predators used three special-teams goals to defeat the
Colorado Avalanche, 3-2, at the Pepsi Center.
Marek Zidlicky and Rem Murray also scored for Nashville, which has captured
five of its last seven contests. David Legwand posted a pair of assists in the
Tomas Vokoun, who had started 13 consecutive games before sitting out
Saturday's loss to San Jose, posted 34 saves for the Predators.
Milan Hejduk and Joe Sakic both lit the lamp for the Avalanche, who dropped
two straight at home for the first time this season after winning three in a
Trailing 2-0 in the third period, Colorado finally got on the board at the
2:41 mark. Hejduk received a nifty cross-ice pass from Alex Tanguay and had
plenty of time to beat Vokoun with a wrister from the deep slot for his 12th
goal of the campaign.
However, a shorthanded goal with 6:15 to play gave the visitors a 3-1 edge.
Predators center Greg Johnson was given a hooking minor at 12:33. However,
midway through the penalty, Vladimir Orszagh blocked a shot and raced all the
way down the ice after the puck. His shot was stopped, but Murray one-timed
the rebound into the net.
With about two minutes to play in the third, the Avs pulled netminder Philippe
Sauve in favor of a sixth skater. With the 6-on-5 edge, Sakic tipped home a
shot from Rob Blake from in front to bring the Avalanche within one.
However, the Predators were able to hold onto their slim lead and time
Sauve allowed three goals on 23 shots.
The Predators took an early lead when Timonen scored his third goal of the
season after just 1:03 had been played in the contest. Colorado defenseman
Karlis Skrastins was called for hooking and the visitors went right to work
with the man advantage. Timonen took a pass from the right corner and fired a
wrist shot over the shoulder of Sauve. It was his third goal of the season.
Another penalty called on the Avalanche allowed Nashville to push its lead to
two goals. Zidlicky was in front of the net when Timonen's shot was stopped
and he punched in the rebound at 5:09 of the second period.
Colorado, which is now 7-5-1 at home this season, wrapped up a five-game
homestand (3-2)...The road team is 8-1-2 in the last 11 meetings in this
series...Colorado is 2-7-2 in its last 11 at home against Nashville...The
Predators went 2-for-4 on the power play, while Colorado went scoreless on
five chances with the extra skater.
