NHL Game Summary - Washington at Detroit

(Monday, November 24th)

Final Score: Washington 4, Detroit 1

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr and Robert Lang both posted a goal and two assists to lead the Washington Capitals to a 4-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Dainius Zubrus added a goal and an assist for Washington, which earned a point for the second consecutive game after dropping a 3-2 overtime decision to Florida on Saturday.

Rastislav Stana made his first career start in goal for Washington and turned aside 38 of the 39 shots he faced in the victory.

Kris Draper scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who have dropped two of their last three contests.

The visitors opened the scoring just before seven minutes had been played in the first period when Jagr's eighth goal of the season, assisted by Sergei Gonchar and Lang, found the back of the net.

Washington then built on its lead with a pair of rebound goals from in front.

First, Zubrus sped down the right-wing side, made a beautiful spin move around a Detroit defenseman and put a shot on goal. The save was made by Detroit goaltender Curtis Joseph, but Bondra poked home the rebound at 8:32 for the two-goal edge.

Soon after, with 8:59 remaining in the opening stanza, Lang found himself in perfect position when Joseph could not cover Gonchar's shot from the right circle. The disc eventually came loose and Lang pushed it into the back of the cage for a 3-0 Washington lead.

The goal also chased Joseph from the net in favor of Manny Legace. Joseph allowed three goals on just nine shots,

A second-period power-play tally allowed the Caps to increase their lead to four. With Chris Chelios in the bin for tripping, Washington controlled the puck around the perimeter before Lang took control along the right half-wall. He then fed a nice pass to Zubrus, whose one-timer from the slot flew by Legace at 3:25.

The only offense Detroit could muster came from Draper, who scored his seventh goal of the season at 6:11 of the final frame.

Legace ended with nine saves through 48:59 for Detroit.
