NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at Carolina

(Thursday, November 13th)

Final Score: Carolina 5, Atlanta 1

Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Erik Cole and Ron Francis each had a goal and an assist to lead Carolina to a 5-1 win over Atlanta at the RBC Center.

Josef Vasicek, Rod Brind'Amour and Kevyn Adams also lit the lamp for the Hurricanes, who rebounded from a 7-1 dismantling by Washington on Wednesday night.

Kevin Weekes turned aside 21 shots in the win.

Patrik Stefan scored the only goal for the Thrashers, who have dropped three of their last four contests. Pasi Nurminen made 28 saves in the loss.

Vasicek's eighth goal of the year with 10:02 left in the opening period gave Carolina a 2-1 edge. Francis controlled the puck in the corner to Nurminen's left and slipped a feed in front to Vasicek, who was positioned in the slot. Vasicek gathered the puck and then wristed a shot through Nurminen's five-hole for the power-play score.

Brind'Amour's power-play tally with only seven-tenths of a second left in the second period extended the Hurricanes' lead to 3-1. Brind'Amour took a pass from Cole and backhanded a shot from the right circle by Nurminen that just snuck into the net before the horn sounded.

Carolina added another goal as it capitalized on a 5-on-3 advantage with 5:52 left in the third period. Jeff O'Neill controlled the puck at the left circle and sent a pass across the goal. The puck hit an Atlanta defender on its way, and then ricocheted off of Francis' left knee and into the net.

The Hurricanes added one final tally on Adams' first goal of the year with 3:31 remaining in the game.

Cole gave Carolina a 1-0 lead just 24 seconds into the game as he skated in on Nurminen, faked the goaltender out and slid a backhand into the empty net.

The Thrashers tied the contest on Patrik Stefan's first tally of the year at the 3:05 mark. Stefan had the puck in front of the net and knocked it towards the goal where it slid by Weekes for the equalizer.
