Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Trent Klatt scored twice and Brad
Chartrand and Alexander Frolov each chipped in a pair of assists, as the Los
Angeles Kings defeated the Washington Capitals, 3-2, at MCI Center.
Sean Avery also found the net and Roman Cechmanek turned aside 23 shots for
Los Angeles, which has earned at least a point in five straight games
Robert Lang tallied both goals for the Capitals, who have dropped three in a
row and fell to 3-11-1 overall for the season. Olaf Kolzig made 27 saves for
The Kings grabbed a 2-1 lead at 8:14 of the second period. Klatt and Chartrand
worked a perfect give-and-go, with Klatt receiving a pass in the lower left
circle and one-timing a shot past Kolzig for his second goal of the contest.
Avery's first tally of the campaign with 13:41 remaining in the third period
increased the advantage to two goals. Avery's initial shot from the right
circle was stopped by Kolzig. Ian Laperriere then banged at the rebound and
the puck caromed off the netminder and into the slot area. Avery followed the
play and was there to flip the puck into the vacated net.
Washington cut the deficit to 3-2 with 5:48 left. Kip Miller's shot from the
top of the slot was stopped by Cechmanek, but Lang was able to poke the
rebound underneath the goaltender for his second tally of the game and sixth
of the season.
The Capitals pulled Kolzig with just over a minute remaining in favor of an
extra attacker. However, Washington's chances at getting the equalizer were
dashed when Peter Bondra took a cross-checking penalty at 19:19.
Klatt opened the scoring just 4:26 into the contest when he re-directed a
centering pass from Chartrand past Kolzig.
Lang responded 1:14 later with his sixth tally of the campaign and the 150th
of his career. Jaromir Jagr attempted a stuffer from the behind the net and
the puck slid out in front. Lang, despite being tied up, was able to get his
stick on it and the puck rolled behind Cechmanek and into the net.
The Kings improved to 6-2-1 in their last nine meetings with the
Capitals...Los Angeles is also unbeaten in its last five trips to Washington
(4-0-1)...Lang extended his point-scoring streak to six games (four goals,
five assists)...Los Angeles' Luc Robitaille played in his 1,300th NHL
game...The Kings were 0-for-3 on the power play, while the Capitals went 0-
for-2 with the man advantage.
