NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Montreal |
(Saturday, November 8th)
Final Score: Montreal 3, Buffalo 0
Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - Jose Theodore posted his 21st career shutout
to lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-0 victory over Buffalo in the back end
of a home-and-home at the Bell Centre. Jan Bulis had a goal and an assist, and
Chad Kilger and Sheldon Souray each tallied in the victory.
Theodore made 16 saves and was faced with just six shots in the third period
for his fourth shutout of the season. Theodore stood tall to knock down a shot
by Taylor Pyatt from the top of the crease late in the third period to keep
the Sabres off the board.
Patrice Brisebois assisted on two goals for the Canadiens, who snapped a
three-game skid one night after losing to the Sabres, 2-1, in Buffalo.
Buffalo had its four-game series winning streak snapped. Mika Noronen made 24
saves in a losing effort.
Bulis scored his first goal of the season at 13:11 of the opening period to
give the Canadiens a 1-0 lead. Bulis, stationed in the slot, got a piece of
Brisebois' wrist shot and the puck deflected past Noronen.
Montreal scored just after the Sabres killed off a penalty to take a two-goal
lead late in the second period. Buffalo was caught in a line change after
Pyatt fired the puck down the ice. Theodore, noticing the line change, came
out of the net and quickly fired a pass to Brisebois in the neutral zone.
Brisebois kept the puck moving, feeding Kilger at the Buffalo blue line. After
carrying the puck into the Sabres' zone, Kilger slammed on the brakes in the
right circle and beat Noronen with a wrist shot to the far side at 18:43.
The Canadiens had a four-minute power-play in the second period, but were
outshot, 2-0, by Buffalo during the stretch.
Richard Zednik appeared to score an empty-net goal late in the contest with
Noronen on the bench in favor of an extra skater, but Curtis Brown threw his
stick to stop the puck. Brown was given a two-minute penalty and Souray scored
on the power play with six seconds left on the clock.
Souray has five of Montreal's last 10 goals...Kilger's goal was also his first
of the season...Canadiens defenseman Stephane Quintal missed his second
straight game because of an irregular heartbeat...Buffalo defenseman Alexei
Zhitnik was ejected and Montreal was awarded a five-minute power play in the
third period when Zhitnik was penalized for a hit on Michael Ryder...The Habs
finished 1-for-8 on the power play, while Buffalo failed in two opportunities
with the extra skater.
