East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Jamie Langenbrunner scored in the final
minute of overtime to give the New Jersey Devils a 3-2 victory over San Jose
at the Meadowlands.
Scott Stevens had two assists for the Devils to reach the 900-point mark for
Turner Stevenson and Christian Berglund also scored for New Jersey, which has
won four straight. Martin Brodeur made 13 saves in the win.
Scott Thornton and Alex Korolyuk scored for the Sharks, who have won just once
in 10 games (1-3-5-1). Evgeni Nabokov made 29 saves in a losing effort.
The Devils carried the play in overtime, buzzing around the San Jose zone and
testing Nabokov with three shots before Langenbrunner scored. John Madden's
first attempt at centering the puck from the right corner was knocked down,
but he got the puck back. The second time he sent a no-look backhand pass
across the front of the goal to Langenbrunner, who scored into the open side
with 43 remaining in the extra session.
Stevenson gave New Jersey a 1-0 lead at 15:28 of the second period with his
first goal of the season.
The Devils would hold on to the one-goal advantage after 40 minutes, but
Korolyuk tallied his first of the season just 34 seconds into the third period
to tie the contest.
Berglund scored to restore New Jersey's lead just two minutes later.
San Jose battled back once again, as Mike Ricci knocked down a clearing
attempt at the Devils' blue line, skated in and fed a pass to the top of the
crease for Thornton, who tied the game at 2-2 at 8:10 of the third.
New Jersey failed on three attempts on the power play, while the Sharks did
not convert on their only opportunity with the extra skater...The Devils
scratched center Igor Larionov (sore ribs) and defensemen Sean Brown and Paul
Martin...The Sharks scratched forward Niko Dimitrakos and defenseman Tom
Preissing...Devils left wing and former Shark Jeff Friesen played in his 700th
