Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Steve Sullivan and Scott Nichol scored goals
just 31 seconds apart in the first period, as the Chicago Blackhawks defeated
the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, 3-1, at the United Center.
Michael Leighton turned aside 29 shots and Kyle Calder also scored for the
Blackhwaks, who have won back-to-back games.
Vaclav Prospal scored for the Mighty Ducks, who have dropped two straight
contests. Jean-Sebastien Giguere stopped 22-of-25 shots for Anaheim.
Sullivan's power-play goal opened the scoring with 6:14 remaining in the first
period. Nathan Dempsey slid a pass across the point and Sullivan ripped a slap
shot over Giguere's glove.
Nichol then tallied his first goal of the year with 5:43 left. He took a pass
from Mark Bell and sent his wrister from the left circle into the upper right
corner of the net.
After a scoreless second period, Calder pushed Chicago's lead to 3-0 at 3:24
of the third. Calder collected the puck behind the net and came out on the
left side to beat Giguere with the wraparound.
The Ducks cut the deficit to 3-1 on Prospal's goal just under three minutes
later. He skated into the Chicago zone and blasted a slap shot from the left
circle past Leighton.
The Blackhawks snapped a six-game unbeaten streak (0-4-2) versus
Anaheim...Chicago center Tuomo Ruutu left the game in the first period with a
bruised shoulder. He returned for one shift, but then left the game for
good...The win was the first of the season for Leighton, who is used as a
backup to Jocelyn Thibault...The Ducks had won two straight in Chicago...The
Blackhawks went 2-for-6 on the power play, while Anaheim failed to score in
three opportunities with the man advantage.
