NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at NY Islanders

(Saturday, November 1st)

Final Score: NY Islanders 4, Anaheim 1

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Jason Blake and Oleg Kvasha each scored first-period goals to lead the New York Islanders to a 4-1 victory over the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim at Nassau Coliseum.

Mariusz Czerkawski and Adrian Aucoin each dished out a pair of assists for the Islanders, who won for just the second time in their last five games (2-2-1). Alexei Yashin and Trent Hunter also scored for New York in the victory.

Rick DiPietro made 17 saves in the winning effort for New York, which started its four-game homestand on the right foot.

Rob Niedermayer scored the Ducks' only goal as they had a three-game unbeaten streak come to an end (2-0-1).

Martin Gerber came into the game having allowed just four goals in his last four starts, but struggled in this one. He gave up three goals on eight shots before being lifted in favor of Jean-Sebastien Giguere, who allowed one goal on 12 shots in his place.

The Islanders scored first when Blake slammed home a rebound of a Hunter shot 4:20 into the contest. Blake's fourth goal of the season gave New York an early 1-0 lead.

Kvasha doubled the Islanders' advantage with a shot from the left circle that beat Gerber and found its way into the back of the net. With 3:26 remaining in the first, the power-play goal gave New York a two-goal advantage.

Yashin scored his fourth of the season 4:50 into the second period. Yashin took a drop pass from Czerkawski in the slot and fired a wrister through Gerber. That was the last shot the Anaheim netminder would face, as Giguere was called in to take his place.

The Ducks attempted to get back into the contest when Niedermayer scored with the man advantage. His fifth goal of the campaign with 13:54 to play in the middle period made it 3-1. Niedermayer he deflected an Andy McDonald shot from the point past DiPietro to get Anaheim on the scoreboard.

New York eventually put the game away early in the third period when Hunter took a feed from Shawn Bates behind the net and slammed it past Giguere for a three-goal cushion.
