Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Robert Esche made 20 saves for his first
shutout of the season, and John LeClair contributed a goal and assist in his
season debut to lead Philadelphia to a 5-0 win over Montreal at the Wachovia
Michal Handzus, Marcus Ragnarsson and Simon Gagne each posted a goal and
assist for the Flyers, who snapped a three-game winless streak (0-1-1-1). Tony
Amonte also scored, while Esche notched his sixth career shutout
Jose Theodore turned away 34-of-39 shots for the Canadiens, who lost their
Justin Williams registered two assists for Philadelphia, which posted its
fifth straight victory in the series.
Less than a minute after killing off a power play, the Flyers went ahead 1-0
on Gagne's first goal of the season. Positioned in the low slot, he gathered a
rebound off a shot by Sami Kapanen. Gagne's backhand off the skate of Montreal
defenseman Sheldon Souray slid past Jose Theodore at 5:38 of the first period.
Esche's save on a breakaway by Canadiens center Mike Ribeiro allowed
Philadelphia to go ahead 2-0 just 3:16 later. Joni Pitkanen fired a shot from
the left wing. Theodore saved the shot and cleared it to Amonte, who scored
from the slot.
The Flyers took a 3-0 lead 2:26 into the second period. Williams gathered a
loose puck behind the net, skated to the left post and slid the puck to the
slot, where Handzus converted his third goal of the season.
LeClair, who missed the first seven games with a broken foot, pushed the edge
to 4-0 off a faceoff with 7:54 left in the second. Williams carried the puck
behind the net and threw the puck to the slot for LeClair, who converted on a
Ragnarsson delivered a power-play goal midway through the third period to cap
Keith Primeau contributed an assist for the Flyers...Montreal stills leads the
all-time series 61-52-30-1...Referee Terry Gregson left in the first period
with a separated shoulder...Before the game Flyers reassigned right wing Mike
Peluso to the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL...LeClair, who played for
Montreal before being traded to the Flyers, has 29 career goals and 17 assists
in 31 career games against the Canadiens...Philadelphia posted a season-high
39 shots on goal.
