Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Steve Reinprecht and Krzysztof Oliwa scored
goals just 1:42 apart in the third period to lift the Calgary Flames to a 4-2
victory over the Edmonton Oilers at Skyreach Centre.
Reinprecht, Craig Conroy and Jarome Iginla each posted a goal and an assist
for the Flames, who improved to 4-3 on the young season. Jamie McLennan
stopped 16 shots in the win.
These Alberta province rivals met 11 days ago with the Flames registering a
Ryan Smyth and Alexei Semenov scored for the Oilers, who have dropped three
straight games. Tommy Salo turned aside 17 shots in the setback.
Reinprecht gave Calgary a 3-2 lead with a power-play tally at 2:25 of the
third period. Conroy carried the puck down the right wing and skated towards
the net before sending a pass into the slot for Reinprecht, who fired a one-
timer past Salo.
Oliwa then made it a two-goal game at the 4:07 mark. He charged in on a
breakaway, faked the backhand and then lifted a wrister over the sprawled out
The Flames opened the scoring on Conroy's power-play goal with 8:20 left in
the first period. Reinprecht passed to a wide-open Conroy, who had an easy
one-timer from just outside the right side of the crease.
Semenov added a power-play goal just 24 seconds into the second period to even
the score for Edmonton. He blasted a slapshot from the right circle that beat
McLennan just inside the post.
Smyth scored on the man advantage 1:21 later to give the Oilers a 2-1 edge.
Steve Staios ripped a shot from the left point and the puck hit off Shawn
Horcoff at the right side of the crease. Horcoff then whacked the puck towards
the goal and Smyth helped it across the line.
Iginla then scored with 2:35 remaining in the middle period to make it a 2-2
game. Andrew Ference slapped the puck from the right point and Iginla, who was
in a crowd in front, deflected the puck past Salo.
The Oilers have been outscored 16-7 during their three-game skid...Calgary has
won three straight and five of the last six meetings...Calgary has also won
four straight in Edmonton...The Flames scored on 2-of-6 power plays, while
Edmonton converted on 2-of-7 chances with the man advantage.
