St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Keith Tkachuk and Pavol Demitra each had a
goal and an assist and Doug Weight added three helpers to lead the St. Louis
Blues to a 4-1 victory over Washington at the Savvis Center.
Chris Osgood stopped 9-of-10 shots in two periods before leaving the game with
a sore hip flexor. Brent Johnson took over in goal for St. Louis and made four
Petr Cajanek and Chris Pronger also scored for the Blues, who have not lost to
Washington since 1997.
Dainius Zubrus scored his first goal of the season for Washington, which is
0-4-1 since winning the opener over the New York Islanders. Olaf Kolzig made
23 saves in a losing effort.
A pair of power-play goals put the Blues in front, 2-0, after 20 minutes of
play. Demitra fired home his own rebound at 12:25 to open the scoring. Pronger
scored with St. Louis skating on a 5-on-3 advantage on a one-timer from the
right circle at 14:36.
Demitra set up Cajanek with a rush into the Caps' zone to increase the St.
Louis lead to 3-0 at 3:57 of the second period.
Tkachuk scored from the top of the crease on a power play to give the Blues a
4-0 cushion at 6:22 of the middle stanza.
Zubrus got the Capitals on the board at 13:27 of the second.
Blues defenseman Al MacInnis is out indefinitely after the discovery of a torn
retina in his left eye. MacInnis underwent surgery on Friday to re-attach the
retina and also had a laser procedure performed on the right eye to repair a
slightly torn retina...St. Louis improved to 8-0-1 in the last nine meetings
with the Caps and has won six straight against Washington at home...Blues
defenseman Christian Backman notched his first career point with an assist on
Cajanek's goal...The Blues finished 3-for-8 on the power play, while
Washington failed in six opportunities with the extra skater.
