Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Patrick Lalime made 27 saves for his first
shutout of the season to lead the Ottawa Senators to a 3-0 victory over
Anaheim at The Pond. Vaclav Varada and Bryan Smolinski scored for the
Senators, who have won two of their first four games (2-1-0-1) to start the
Marian Hossa scored into an empty net with 1:53 remaining to seal the win and
send the Ducks to their first ever 0-4 start.
Varada gave the Senators the lead just 52 seconds into the contest with his
first goal of the season. Zdeno Chara's shot was stopped by Anaheim netminder
Jean-Sebastien Giguere, but Varada collected the rebounded at the side of the
net and backhanded the rebound past the netminder for a 1-0 lead.
Lalime robbed Stanislav Chistov with a glove save on a shot from point blank
range early in the third period to preserve the one-goal lead just before
Smolinski fired the puck toward the front of the Anaheim net and it deflected
off the skate of Ducks defenseman Vitaly Vishnevski and past Giguere for a 2-0
lead at 10:58 of the third period.
Giguere finished with 25 saves.
The Ducks finished 0-for-3 on the power play and have just one goal in 16
opportunities with the extra skater this season. Ottawa failed in three power-
play chances..Lalime posted his 29th career shutout...Anaheim, which has been
shutout in back-to-back games, has scored just twice in four games to begin
the season...The Senators improved to 6-1-2 in their last nine games against
Anaheim...Senators coach Jacques Martin recorded his 300th regular-season
victory with Ottawa - the most by any active coach with his current team.
