Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Rick Nash registered a goal and an assist to
lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 over the Chicago Blackhawks at
Geoff Sanderson assisted on both power-play goals for Columbus, which won its
third straight contest.
Marc Denis looked solid in goal, posting 29 saves in the victory, while Todd
Marchant also scored. Columbus forward Andrew Cassels left the game with a
Brett McLean tallied the lone goal for the Blackhawks, who lost their third
straight contest and have scored just four goals in four games on the young
The Blue Jackets opened the scoring at 3:21 of the second period. After Lasse
Lukkonen was called for hooking, Columbus worked the puck around its offensive
zone, but could not put the puck home. However, with six seconds to go in the
penalty, Alexander Karpovtsev drew a whistle for slashing.
Once Lukkonen left the penalty box, the Blue Jackets, still skating 5-on-4,
took the lead on Nash's goal. Jaroslav Spacek's wrister was stopped, but the
rebound came right to Nash, who lifted the disc past a sprawling Jocelyn
Thibault at the right post for his third of the season.
Thibault turned aside 34 of the 36 shots he faced in the contest.
Another penalty on the visitors allowed the Blue Jackets to go ahead by two.
With Jon Klemm in the bin for a holding call, Columbus took control with the
man advantage. Sanderson, who also assisted on the first Columbus goal, took a
nice feed from Nash from behind the net. Thibault made the save on Sanderson's
shot, but Marchant was left all alone and put the rebound home for a 2-0 edge
McLean cut Chicago's deficit in half with just over 12 minutes to go in
the third. The puck was behind the net and after a brief scrum, Steve Sullivan
threw a pass out in front. The disc deflected off of Igor Radulov's skate and
went right to McLean, who snapped it along the ice past Denis to the
Chicago started to press as time wound down, but could not put the puck home.
Midway through the period, an uncontested one-timer from the slot just missed
the net. In the final minute, Thibault was pulled for the extra skater, but to
Nash has scored three goals in four games...With his second assist, Sanderson
became the Blue Jackets' all-time points leader with 141, surpassing Ray
Whitney...Chicago forward Alexei Zhamnov is out with back problems. The team
captain was expected to undergo surgery on Thursday and could by out for up to
six weeks...The home team is now 9-1-2 in the last 12 meetings between these
two teams...The Blackhawks are 1-5-1 in their last seven trips to Ohio.
