NHL Game Summary - Chicago at Columbus

(Thursday, October 16th)

Final Score: Columbus 2, Chicago 1

Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Rick Nash registered a goal and an assist to lead the Columbus Blue Jackets to a 2-1 over the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationwide Arena.

Geoff Sanderson assisted on both power-play goals for Columbus, which won its third straight contest.

Marc Denis looked solid in goal, posting 29 saves in the victory, while Todd Marchant also scored. Columbus forward Andrew Cassels left the game with a bruised back.

Brett McLean tallied the lone goal for the Blackhawks, who lost their third straight contest and have scored just four goals in four games on the young season.

The Blue Jackets opened the scoring at 3:21 of the second period. After Lasse Lukkonen was called for hooking, Columbus worked the puck around its offensive zone, but could not put the puck home. However, with six seconds to go in the penalty, Alexander Karpovtsev drew a whistle for slashing.

Once Lukkonen left the penalty box, the Blue Jackets, still skating 5-on-4, took the lead on Nash's goal. Jaroslav Spacek's wrister was stopped, but the rebound came right to Nash, who lifted the disc past a sprawling Jocelyn Thibault at the right post for his third of the season.

Thibault turned aside 34 of the 36 shots he faced in the contest.

Another penalty on the visitors allowed the Blue Jackets to go ahead by two. With Jon Klemm in the bin for a holding call, Columbus took control with the man advantage. Sanderson, who also assisted on the first Columbus goal, took a nice feed from Nash from behind the net. Thibault made the save on Sanderson's shot, but Marchant was left all alone and put the rebound home for a 2-0 edge at 14:37.

McLean cut Chicago's deficit in half with just over 12 minutes to go in the third. The puck was behind the net and after a brief scrum, Steve Sullivan threw a pass out in front. The disc deflected off of Igor Radulov's skate and went right to McLean, who snapped it along the ice past Denis to the stickside.

Chicago started to press as time wound down, but could not put the puck home. Midway through the period, an uncontested one-timer from the slot just missed the net. In the final minute, Thibault was pulled for the extra skater, but to no avail.
