Montreal, QC (Sports Network) - David Desharnais scored the only goal of the
shootout as the Montreal Canadiens took a 3-2 win over the Ottawa Senators.
In the second round, Desharnais snuck a low backhand between the pads of Ben
Bishop. Carey Price then made stops on Jason Spezza and Daniel Alfredsson for
Desharnais and Erik Cole scored in regulation for the Canadiens, who have won
three of four. Price stopped 35 shots and all three shooters in the shootout.
"It was a real good group effort tonight," said Cole. "Their team has been
playing real well and they're a tough team to play against. Our guys did a
great job in managing the puck smartly."
Colin Greening and Erik Karlsson both had goals for the Senators, who have
dropped their past two. Bishop finished the game with 24 stops.
"It was a solid road game, both teams played things close to the vest," said
Ottawa head coach Paul MacLean. "For some reason, this team doesn't bring out
the best in us for some reason. Whathever it is, we have to find the
Ottawa has 82 points and sits in the seventh spot in the Eastern Conference,
but is just one point behind Boston for the lead in the Northeast Division and
second, overall, in the conference.
This was the opener of a home-and-home as the two squads will play in Ottawa
Montreal scored 13:45 into the first when Cole skated into the Ottawa end and
fired a wrister on net before recovering his own rebound and burying the
Ottawa, though, answered just 26 seconds later when Greening tapped the puck
in from the right side off a broken shot from Milan Michalek.
The middle period passed scoreless, but the Canadiens took the lead 24 seconds
into the third when P.K. Subban sent a hard pass from the right point to the
low right side where Desharnais got his stick in the air for the redirect.
The Senators again tied the game with 8:59 to play in regulation as Karlsson's
wrister from the right point went through a screen for his 19th goal of the
Karlsson tied the Ottawa record for most goals in the season by a defenseman.
He now shares it with Steve Duchesne, who notched 19 in the 1996-97
campaign...Montreal has taken three of four from Ottawa this season...Neither
side scored on the power play, as Ottawa had three chances and Montreal one.
